Thank you for the suggestion, but I would rather get a modern Metallica album, snap the CD in two and force the pieces through my ears. It was bad enough having to hear A7X the first time around.

It’s an acquired taste. I didn’t really like them the first time around until I found the good stuff. It also would depend on what era you listened to. Which album are you describing? If it’s the most recent one then I kinda agree.

  • So the main time I was hearing them via school friends etc would have been around when I got into Metallica when Death Magnetic came out so 2008-9 ish listening to then-new A7X and a few previous albums. I have heard them a few times since and my opinion hasn’t changed much. Like Metallica but cringey and tryhard-y.

  • Ok, so that would be around the self-titled album time. Beyond the 2003-10 albums, it was a mix of a few really good songs and then mediocre stuff.

  • I think the main reason I dislike them so intensely is because all the people I know who like or liked them tend to foam at the mouth about them and have done for years, and in my opinion they’re average at best. For the record I dislike the adult-rated-intimacy pistols as well, but I don’t know many just-beyond-middle-aged punks so I’m less exposed to them.

  • I actually don't listen to much of anything these days, maybe some NSP on roadtrips but that's it. I never found any band I liked enough to listen to all their music so everything I've got is scattered across dozens of artists

  • That’s fair. Most of the time I get really into one or two albums from an artist but that’s it. Quite a lot of my favourite albums are by artists that I don’t much care for the rest of their stuff at all. There are artists I like the whole catalogue of but they’re pretty rare tbh, and even then only one or two albums stand out.

  • Do you play things on vinyl? Is everything better just digital these days?

  • I have bought vinyls in the past and whilst it’s a very good experience playing one (and being able to properly see the album cover), you can’t beat digital for ease of use, or in fact sound quality. Vinyl gets scratched and dusty and the needles wear down, and if something isn’t working right it’ll play too slow or fast or skip and it can be a right mare to fix something if you don’t know what you’re doing. AND you still need a decent speaker system else it will just sound crap. The best thing you can do to upgrade your music experience is upgrading your speakers or headphones. The music itself isn’t too important past a certain point, so moving to vinyl won’t make your $5 PC speakers any better. If I was to get into physical media again it would be CDs.
