Wear your band merch

The only excuses not to wear it are if it doesn’t fit you anymore or you don’t like it or otherwise find it embarrassing (looking at you Cradle of Filth fans nervously standing in front of the wardrobe when your overly Christian in-laws come to visit) It’s not made to be gathering dust while you hope it becomes a collectors item in a decade or two's time, it’s made to be WORN, sweated through, ripped, misshapen, loved. - Context - Supreme (popular luxury clothing brand) just dropped a colab with the band Melvins and after purchasing a few items (the only supreme items I ever intend to own by the way) I happened to watch a YouTuber deriding it as trash simply because they didn’t know the band and therefore had no idea of its resale value but assumed it to be low. Like, I know that’s the deal with Supreme, but imagine anybody saying that about any other band merch. You don’t buy band merch for the resale value, just how can you miss the point that badly? I happily paid £150 for a bright orange hoodie and will gladly see its resale value go to £5 if I can get it dirty, stained, ripped, worn, etc. I bought a t-shirt for £300 the other year from a different band and I have the same attitude towards it. I mean I don’t wear it to bed or anything and I CARE when it gets dirty, but that’s because it is precious to me as a nice thing, not as an 'investment'.

All I wear are band tees. Yes, I know that's massively cringe. Do I care? Not entirely 'cause I actually know how to dress when I can be arsed to do so or feel like spending the money on a shirt that doesn't have an illegible logo on it.

  • The closest thing I have to band merch is my Team Chaos t-shirt I bought during the final Splatoon 2 Splatfest. Whether or not it's considered band merch would depend on whether or not you'd consider Off the Hook to be a real band or not, which, like, I would, but I'm sure some people would disagree. Anyway, I regret to inform you I will never wear that thing. Though, I'm also not, like, ever planning on reselling it, either (not that it would sell for very much). I have it pinned up on my wall. I always bought it with the intention of it being more of a poster than an actual shirt. It's a nice place to put all my pins up, too. I did try wearing it once, though. It was very uncomfortable. :D

    • I only ever had one piece of band merch - a Bullet For My Valentine tee-shirt that I wore back in high school. When the sleeves became tattered from wear and tear, I converted it into a tank top. I used that tank top until it had about as many holes as swiss cheese. Wear your band merch, people.

      • Band merch is some of my favorite things to wear. I tend to wear my merch even when I'm supposed to be in uniform for... school. I may show a picture later of my favorite piece of merch, a nice hoodie from the A7X NA tour last year. I recently got a neat piece of Devil Wears Prada merch as well that I'd like to show off.

        • I have SO many shirts. Almost every show I go to me/my dad get a shirt, which eventually becomes my shirt. My whole wardrobe is band t-shirts virtually. I'm wearing a shirt from a cool record shop right now. Yeah why do people buy -blam!- and then not use it? Just don't buy it then.
I get what Aifos is talking about though, that's different from a band shirt.
• Sadly, I no longer have my Van Halen t shirt from the Diver Down tour. I wore it out decades ago. I do still have my VH necklace, and a recent REO Speedwagon t shirt. That's all I got.
