Community Focus - MattOishi

May 18, 2016 - Cozmo_BNG

Once again, we shine our spotlight on another amazing member of the Destiny community. You continue to impress us in new and interesting ways. The mediums may change, but the inspiration remains the sights and sounds of the world of Destiny. Today’s focus falls on MattOishi, who has created some really cool Destiny animations in his spare time. We’ll let him tell you all about it.

What would you say your niche is in the Destiny community?

MO: I create short animations based in Destiny, most of them so far are skits playing on things going on in the game, or just silly ideas like a Titan wearing a chef hat making dinner.

I’ve seen these animations, they are kick ass! Where can others go to find them?

MO: Thanks! Generally I’ll post to /r/destinythegame, but things are always moving there so I started a blog on Tumblr vexmindloop.tumblr.com for a more centralized place to show off the animations. I’ve also been getting into streaming my animations sessions on Twitch as well.

I’ll try to stop by and watch the next time you’re streaming. It sounds interesting. What do you use to create your animations. How much time do you usually spend on them?

MO: I mainly use Blender, a free and open source 3D program to animate. I spend a decent amount of time working on or thinking about these animations aside from playing Destiny. Depending on complexity, the ones I've posted took about four hours to five days. I get picky about movement, so there’s a lot of ideas that have been started but are still being worked on. For example the short fight scene I posted on Reddit, that one I was reworking over and over for about two months before it was presentable, still working on that one though. I intend to add more to it in the future.

We can’t wait to see what you come up with next. What first motivated you to start doing this?

MO: One of the first things I really admired about Destiny is its animation, so that in itself was the initial spark. What got me really motivated was when my friend and I started to bounce ideas around about what would be cool or interesting that we could make into an animation. For most of year one, we just had this list of skits we wanted to make. Once I figured out how to setup the characters properly and get the rendering to look decent I was finally able to make our ideas come to life. And honestly, without his input and support these animations probably would not have happened.

When you’re not animating other Guardians, what do you use to fight off minions of darkness?

MO: I main a Hunter, and generally prefer Blade Dancer. My usual weapons of choice are The Last Word, Stillpiercer, and Bretomart's Stand. I’ve also taken a liking to The First Curse, and Thesan combo, but that’s my Crucible load out. As for battles against the darkness, I go for Nightstalker, with a variety of hand cannons, scouts, snipers, and swords.

Sounds like you and I have similar tastes for dispatching our enemies. Do you have a favorite memory while playing Destiny?

MO: During one of my first Crucible games, playing Control on Rusted Lands, I was heading towards zone C from alpha spawn I think, and as I was running through the doorway next to the staircase suddenly a guardians body comes cartwheeling through the air in front of me screaming “AAAHHHHGGG!” in the midst of the chaos above my head. I should make a dramatic reenactment of that moment.

What would you like to add or change about Destiny?

MO: I would definitely love to see more places to explore, when I hear Xander talk about the New York Crater, or battling in Momento, I have this longing to explore more. Other than that, I enjoy Destiny through and through.

Go give MattOishi’s animations a look. They’re pretty impressive. Do you have a player or group that you would like to see featured as a future Community Focus? Post your suggestion on our Community forum with the tag #CommunityFocus and we will take them under consideration.
