So, a buddy of mine (Versing At War) and I (FaceXFootStyle) came up with an idea (that maybe some people have already come up with):
There should be a practice shooting range somewhere in Destiny. Unless you read the weekly updates about gun tuning, spend your whole life patrolling, or frequent Planet Destiny and their videos, the stats on a gun are very ambiguous. It's basically impossible to tell what sort of practical *impact* (haha! ha!) changing those stats will have on your gun. Obviously you could just patrol a ton like I said or get stomped in the crucible while you're trying to decide if you even like a gun that you just spent your life savings on, but why not make it better on everyone? As if the Guardians wouldn't have one anyway.
There are innumerable reasons why this is a good idea, but here are three:
1) It gives guardians a non-competitive place to try out weapons. They can figure out the optimal range for a weapon, their preferred scope, how the different perk stats affect the weapon's use, etc.
2) It can give guardians a chance to really decide on a weapon before truly committing to it. Obviously, any motes, glimmer, or whatever that have been spent on these weapons would be lost should the user decide to scrap it, but there's a difference between simply upgrading a weapon and truly investing in one. This could help tip the scales much earlier, so we can move on to the loot we actually want, not just using something because we feel like we have to.
3) As a sort of counter to my last point, you could maybe introduce a weapon rental system through Banshee. I understand this may be asking too much, but it would be AMAZING to try out the Down and Doubt 00-0 before realizing you've made a terrible mistake. If not that though, then maybe it could become the primary vehicle for getting Gunsmith rank. I can see it now: "Omolon VR-7, Scout Rifle - The Future is what we make it. Take this weapon to the shooting range and eliminate targets. 0/100" Once you do, gunsmith rep acquired. Obviously you'd still bring your own weapons in, but it could have that unique twist too.
So there it is. Again, I'm sure someone out there in this mega-universe has thought of this, but if you like the idea/have more positives of your own to add, bump this post and let's talk!
Thanks for reading!

I still wouldn't be able to hit anything with a HC though, I know what guns I like and I'm sure a shooting range would just highlight that,I'm not against it but it's been in the wish list for over a year and nothing has happened, maybe d2.

Hum...copying Division!?

I agree- but even better than a shooting range, how bout a Halo Forge in Destiny? You could be able to choose a patrol or PoE map, and then customize the enemies, light level, and modifiers to improve your skills. If Bungie is worried about balance, they could make it practice only with no Rep (dick move), but it would still be fun to work with. Even better, you can argue that it will solve the lack of content in Destiny because the players are making and playing the content that they want. Want a new exotic quest rather than just grinding RNG? Make an exotic mission. Want a mission to explain lore? You could do it.

Patrol?

There's an announcement in The Tower stating that contrary to what Cayde-6's statement there isn't a shooting range on the promenade.

Maybe a golf course, tennis court and Yoga place.. what is this GTA??
-
I always thought it would be kind of complicated, until using the one from the division. Something like that would be perfect.

It's on the list of mothballed ideas you can find posted by cosmo labeled "community wishlist" along with other rather interesting and highly requested ideas.

This was suggested early year one. Nothing new about this suggestion.

This is an idea that we all want, but they wont do it. They want you grinding for weapons and spending as much time logged on as possible. The reason the stats are so vauge on weapons is they dont want you to know which is easily the best just looking at the stats. So they would never implement something that directly cuts down grind time.

Edited by FatMacBrbn: 4/25/2016 11:37:58 PMWith a shooting range available, we should have the option to return guns in exchange for another on Armsday. Just in case we change our minds about our first pick of the weapon group.

I came in here for a laugh, but you actually make a good case.Shoot at a target that will give you the energy foot pounds of each hit to compare guns. Then have it tell you total energy per second at rate of fire...Could be cool. Hell, you do it in real life. When I buy ammo I look for flatter trajectories and high energy at a hundred yards...with minimal falloff until three hundred yards. I just tested out a sweet auto rifle this week from Banshee that I wish I could find in legendary weapons. It was like an AK 47.

Bungie has said they don't want you to know the true weapon stats because it becomes a "numbers game" I completely disagree with bungie here, but because they think this for some reason we probably will never get one :(

Sounds like a complete waste of resources to me,you can either aim, shoot and kill in this game,or you can't,no amount of buggering about on a virtual firing range is gonna change that.

Patrol is more or less your shooting range.

Instead of a rental or putting in motes and materials, have the shooting range be a place you load into from the director. When you load in to the shooting range ( even have fireteam of up to 6 able to load for passive competition, challenges etc.) All guns that are not upgraded already will have nodes unlocked in the shooting range only. That way you can truly test the weapons without sinking materials into the guns.

Honestly I've felt that all vendors should have a simple gun range option even if it's another map Like... What is the recoil pattern really like on this gun? Is it worth the marks? Just something to let us test fire it. But then you run into either needing yet another map or landing zone... Or dealing with bugs and such with people being able to fire weapons in the tower. So I just use YouTube to see some reviews in action to get an idea about the feel of it.

It's called patrol

It is on the wish list of doom.
