So, how come some guardians have died permanently while we get revived over and over? My theory is that the ghosts revive us using light the traveller is collecting while trying to heal itself. So, when we die at a slow rate, 1 or 2 here and there it is able to keep up, but during large battles like six fronts, twilight gap, and the assault on the moon, where guardians are dying in droves it cannot keep up. Maybe if your not revived soon enough you die permantly.
This does not account for the original raid parties of vog and crota. The vog party was erased from time. My theory doesnt account for why eris's raid team could not be revived. Maybe their were extenuating circumstances? What do you think?

I think at six fronts the fallen had 31 impact snipers and res sniped us.

The Ghosts in Eris' fireteam either died from the lack of connection to Light, or had the Light stripped from them by the Hive. Darkness Zones are actually mentioned in the Grim under the Cabal cards and seem to be areas where the Darkness is heavily concentrated, so probably high death areas. In these areas, Ghosts require Light from another Guardian to help revive. There's no telling what happened to the Ghosts in Twilight Gap or Battle of the Six Fronts as those most likely became Darkness Zones.

We use the Light inside our Ghosts to be revived. For example, if we are in a Darkness zone out Ghosts can't muster enough Light to revive us (so Bungie just has us restart at the last checkpoint as if it never happened). So if a Guardian's Ghost dies or is separated from them, they cannot be revived. Very simple

The reason we keep getting revived is because when we wipe we get to act like it never happened (because perma-death would suck in Destiny) and because our Ghost cant get destroyed. As far as the lore is concerned Ghosts can die, and if they do the next time their guardian dies they die for good. There are also locations, the "Darkness Zones" you find in-game are places where the Light is too weak and/or the Darkness is too strong for ghosts to generate sufficient Light to revive their guardian without an infusion of light from another guardian.

Ghosts can be destroyed. It doesn't happen in game because...rip destiny

Your ghost won't rez you if it's dead.
The ghost needs a ghost, it seems.

The real question is: why were so many guardians this irresponsible with their ghosts? I mean, ours were there for the killing of gods, and came out fine.
My ghost needs a Google Maps update... ...I've been forever lost in the dark corners of time a few times. You'd think the ghost would have a better GPS setup.

Not a theory... It is in the lore. As long as a Guardians ghost survives, the Guardian can come back over and over. If the Ghost dies, then the Guardian cannot come back.
