What was this "Latch Key Discovery"?
I still don't get it. Everything was explained canon wise before Halo Reach was made. What did the fragment of Cortana have that changed the war in any way?
I'm pretty sure Cortana found the coordinates of Halo through a crystal. So what?
The reason I ask is that I read someone's comment saying that Noble Team's mission was the thing that saved Humanity. Which doesn't make sense to me. Humanity was fine long before Noble Team were added to canon..
But go. Enlighten me.

Cortana was divided into two halves, one stayed on reach to decode and decipher the forerunner language. The other was with the chief. The latch key I believe was like the rosetta stone for the forerunner language, it would help Cortana in figuring out their language. This helps her with finding information about Halo and other such things when she accesses security systems. In my opinion.

Sorry if this was already posted but this is how i see it Cortana set a course for the halo ring, the distruction of the ring caused the prophets to lose faith in the elites mainly the Arbiter plus this event lead him to becoming the Arbiter, without that the alliance between the Elites and the UNSC would not be forged also without the knowledge they gained from the first halo ring they may not have known much else about the ring from halo 2 or from the ark and its replacement halo ring so in sence Cortana making that heading to the first halo ring set off a bit of a dominos effect which saved earth, thats how i see it anyways, sorry about my horrid dyslexic spelling by the way.

Also forgot to mention that cortana was split in half, here main functions were aboard the pillar of autumn, and the functions related to the forerunner excavation, was down there, so essentially noble team carried half of cortana to keyes. [Edited on 06.08.2011 5:36 AM PDT]
Posted by: jross1993 And I read your explanation. So it was just an upgrade so Cortana could interface with Forerunner tech?
Yes, it wasn't Cortana herself, she was on the Pillar. The package that 6 carried was her 'upgrade' to analyzing Forerunner data. Kat apparently helped decode it by pure accident.
-
Simple, the latchkey discovery was used as a "key" or a "password" or however you would describe it to decode the forerunner artefact at the oni excavation site, thus giving cortana some info and the co-ords for instillation 004. Anyways i dont consider reach cannon.
Posted by: Alpha00
Posted by: medowiemauler1 Yes certain sentences. Please mail the rest if you want me to reply like i said im trying to piece things together i dont remeber much from cutscenes but i remeber the covernant trying to disable their ship so that the flood couldnt escape and just kill everyone. Also i dont remebr anything about a crystal if that was in a book or a cutscene please tell me.
I haven't played through the entire CE campaign yet (going to when I get back from a trip) but from the books, it seems like they weren't in a big hurry to get away.
In the game they were trying to repair the ship and leave the ring asap. They sent in strike teams to deal with the Flood so they could get the ship out of there. This obviously failed as the Humans captured and destroyed it in the books. And I read your explanation. So it was just an upgrade so Cortana could interface with Forerunner tech?

Sheesh, I write up a perfectly reasonable explination and it's totaly ignored.
Posted by: medowiemauler1 Yes but the coveneant was trying to stop them from capturing the truth and reconcilliation (spelt wrong i know) they could have disabled it and thourt they would have stoped it until the gravemind figured it out. As well even though coveneant ships were faster the UNSC had pretty good controll over the artifiact and the coveneant would not have been able to catch up that quickly seeing as by the time they finsihed studying the artifact the pillar of autumn was most likely taking off. Also the covenant were tracking the pillar of Autumn and found it coordinate of were it was going to come out without having to study the artifact they already new of the ring they didnt need to learn about them overly. Also some of this may be guess work okay im trying to piece bits together.
Are you responding to me?
Posted by: medowiemauler1 I am a bit confused also, though i would like to point out humanity wasnt fine with or without noble team they were slowly being pushed back by the covernant and if noble 6 didnt stop the carrier from blasting the Pillar of Autumn and making a bunch of fire works then the flood would have most likely been contained or not if not we were probably going to die but im pretty sure that a protacal is that if a ship is in danger of capture they make a blind jump so if they did a blind jump they could have hit halo.
Okay. Before Halo Reach was introduced to the series, the PoA was in space during the battle and escaped fine. It never landed. Bungie decided to change this for some reason... It wasn't a blind jump. Cortana used the coordinates that she got from the Forerunner crystal and used them instead. She didn't know that it would lead to Halo however.

It was the ability to make lightspeed travel more volatile at the cost of higher radiation. Hence the quote:
Cortana: As for tracking us all the way from Reach, at lightspeed my maneuvering options were limited. Keyes: We were running dark, yes? Cortana: Until we decelerated, no one could have missed the hole we tore in subspace.
First of all, the coordinates of halo were found from the artifact on Sigma Octanus (probably spelled it wrong) IV. What Noble team did was they brought all the decoded data from the artifact under Sword Base. Basically, if noble team hadn't done what they'd done, Cortana couldn't hack forunner security, therefore chief would think firing halo was safe, end of all life in the galaxy. Plus, if the Six didn't destroy the carrier, Pillar wouldn't have made it off the planet and MC would be dead.
Ok, first of all, the Covenant analyzed the artifact as well. This means that the Covenant would've been on halo anyway. From this, potentially two things could happen: Either they captured a human and will force the human to activate the rings (ending all life in the galaxy) or the flood would capture a covenant ship (all life in the galaxy assimmilated). Pick one. Also note that the launch wasn't in fact blind. Cortana knew the coordinates to halo and decided to go there. [Edited on 06.08.2011 4:39 AM PDT]

reach's campaign was pointless. nobody accomplished anything. in fact, if noble team got hit by a comet in the opening cutscene and died right then and there, nothing would have changed.
