World War 2 Quickie! (Special Announcement bonus!)

The Battle of Midway began today in what would be the turning point in the Pacific Campaign of World War 2. It would also be the first time a naval battle was fought using only planes to attack an enemy. At the battle of Midway the U.S. Navy inflicted irreparable damage on the Japanese fleet, of mainly carriers. This would set the Japanese on the defensive for basically the rest of the war. It is known as the single greatest/decisive naval victory ever achieved! Picture- The Midway Atoll Special announcement!: I will be posting a relatively large post on June 6th to commemorate D-day, and I always say it but maybe I will go back to doing daily world war 2 facts again as well. Thank you for reading and I will see you on the beaches of Normandy!

  • Thank god I have Battlefield 1942. WW2 was nuts, and I wish I could have been around to be apart of it.

Midway was nuts. Sadly I can't claim to know a whole lot more about the battle than what you just posted other than how it changed carrier combat tactics so much (especially making everyone realize the importance of the first strike). After years of looking at WW2 as a whole I am finally starting to settle on the Pacific as a field to focus intensely on but I have a very long way to go. Dunno if you've ever read Richard B. Frank's stuff: Downfall, Guadalcanal, and MacArthur. Awesome books, highly recommend. They are what got me moving toward the Pacific. You have any pure-Pacific stuff you'd recommend? I have a whole Amazon wishlist full right now and I'm trying to take this slowly but I'm always up for suggestions. Will keep an eye out for the June 6th post. I hope there are some nascent war nerds reading your posts on this site and taking inspiration, Raptor.
