I leveled up my Husk yesterday doing the "The Dark Beyond" mission as described in OP's post. I set it to level 9 to make sure you get more mobs to take out and just killed them all as they appeared from the door and then restart the wave. It took about 20 minutes to unlock the perk to upgrade the weapon (around 500 hive kills).
