Okay, first and foremost, the Hawkmoon is my favorite weapon in Destiny and has been for quite some time now.
I have 14 exotics, and so many legendaries that I ran out of space and had to delete the obsolete ones. I have recently been testing out my most damage producing primary guns compared to my Hawkmoon. I have been testing these weapons out by shooting various bosses at various levels with the Hawkmoon in the precision spots. Then, making the exact same shots, from the exact same distance, in the exact same amount of time with other primary weapons.
For example: The Hawkmoon takes roughly 6 seconds to shoot its 13 bullets. When shooting Septiks Prime from a tiger strike in its precision spot for 6 seconds/13 bullets, the damage that it produces always equals 8,694 damage.
I know, that's a lot right :)
When I do the same thing with other primary weapons in the game (rather good primary weapons that many people consider some of the best), nothing ever even comes close. The last weapon that I recorded doing this was with the Vision of Confluence. After shooting ole Septiks for roughly 6 seconds (which was its full magazine of 19 bullets), the damage that it produced equaled 5,776 damage.
That is about 2/3 of what the Hawkmoon can produce. (Which btw--that doesn't necessarily mean that it's a bad weapon, in fact I still find it to be a great weapon). But, regardless it still doesn't even come close in pure damage.
Also, note that this is just my first attempt at testing these things out. If I get serious with this experiment, then I am aware that I will need to test these guns out for much longer than 6 seconds to take in account that some weapons reload much faster/slower. Which could result in more or less damage dealt over an amount of time. Plus, I would need to test different weapons out that have a different roll of perks that could be more beneficial for expelling more damage out.
What is the point if this experiment? Find a primary weapon that can produce more damage to a boss than the Hawkmoon in a specific amount if time.
This is the first day that I started testing these primary weapons out, so as of now I don't have a lot of data. With that being said, if anyone actually cares about this post, then I will try to update my results as often as possible.

***Well, thank you all for showing me how much you guys enjoyed this post. After receiving over 200 replies, it is very clear that there are many of you out there who are just as curious as I am to see just how much damage out some of these primary weapons can produce.
I have been receiving a very large amount of requests to test out The Last Word against the Hawkmoon, and quite frankly, I have became astonished by my findings.
This time I tested these weapons out on a level 22 Phogoth. This is what I came up with.
First, I must address that I have and will always test these weapons out on a boss from the same distance with each weapon in that boss battle. I have tested these weapons from a realistic distance. I wasn't sniping Phogoth with these weapons, and I also didn't get ridiculously close.
With that being said, it turns out that The Last Word has an extreme disadvantage at range (and not even that much range to be honest). I am not sure if Bungie intended the weapon to work this way, but here we go.
When hip firing The Last Word at Phogoth in his precision spot (which does bonus precision damage because the perk Last Word was unlocked) the weapon hit him with an average of 400 damage per shot. I was highly surprised to find this, because I expected Last Word perk to allow the gun to do WAY more damage per shot.
This is where I became even more disappointed. I decided to try aiming down the sights on him at that same range, and I still hit him with on average 400 damage per shot. It appears that after you exceed a specific range The Last Word's perk (Last Word) doesn't take affect.
With that being said...this weapon clearly didn't stand a chance against the Hawkmoon, which did 621 damage for 10 shots, and 3 shots of 828 damage. This totaled out to be yet again 8,694 damage.
I shot both weapons at Good ole Phogoth for 7 seconds each. In those 7 seconds Hawkmoon only expelled its magazine once, and The Last Word was able to shoot all 8 bullets, then reload, and shoot 8 more. In that time The Last Word was able to do 6,400 damage to Phogoth, and the Hawkmoon did 8,694.
Now, you may be thinking to yourself why the heck didn't I get extremely close to him with The Last Word, after all it's considered a close range weapon at times. I well, I tried but the distance that I reached where Last Word actually took effect was extremely close and definitely not reasonable. I want my findings to be as accurate and realistic as possible. The data shouldn't be theoretical, it should exemplify a real situation. Sure, if I ran directly up to Phogoth and whispered in his ear while barrel stuffing him in the stomach, then maybe The Last Word would have put up a greater fight, but that's not realistic--You will die.
Anyway, these were my findings. I was shocked that everyone's favorite badass cowboy revolver didn't come as close as I thought it would. I will be testing The Last Word out on more bosses, because the outcome just didn't seem right. Who knows, maybe I did something wrong. I will keep trying though. Thank you all for the constructive suggestions. Some of you have had some really great findings. I appreciate it.

***Well guys it turns out that I have some new findings. This is something of astronomical proportions that could change the way we see things forever. It turns out that...I am a jackass.
But seriously I'm a human, we all make mistakes, so go easy on me. I didn't realize that my The Last Word was not fully upgraded, but my Hawkmoon was, which basically rendered my most recent test pointless. I will quickly fix this, and try again with the proper weaponry. :)

***Ok guys, I have been reading a lot of your responses, and thanks to all of your awesome feedback, I have come to the conclusion that I must do these tests a bit differently. :)
From now on, my tests will revolve around the amount of damage that maxed primaries can entirely inflict. Meaning, the amount of damage they inflict after completely expelling their ammo, from both the magazine and the reserve.
Keep in mind, that I will be testing these weapons with no armor that will help the weapons out. For example, I will not be wearing armor that has increased reload speed for the weapon that I am testing, or increased ammo capacity for the weapon. That way, I will ensure that every primary weapon will be tested in its original form; which should ensure more accurate stats. The weapons that I test will be completely maxed to 331. Except the Vex, which will be maxed to 323, which is its max.
This way, there should be no particular bias toward any specific weapon. Even the master race Hawkmoon. ;) This new system should eliminate any doubts regarding certain variables, such as reload speed, or fire rate. I hope you guys will enjoy the new system, and the more accurate stats that will be the outcome from these new and improved experiments. :)
Furthermore, stats incoming! Fairly soon, I will be posting stat comparisons on the Vex, The Last Word, Red Death, possibly Timur's Lash, (Universal Remote if I can get my hands on it), Mida Multi-Tool, No Land Beyond ;), and many more. Just keep suggesting the weapons that you guys want to be tested. I will do my best to test them, and let you guys in on my findings.
Prepare for updates soon guys!
