Joined a Magic School D&D Campaign

Its a homebrew thing, not that Magic the Gathering crossover book or some Harry Potter reflavor. Though honestly any magic school thing is gonna end up with Harry Potter vibes whether we want it or not. Anyway, we got a party of six all playing caster classes and accidentally filling high-school tropes. In the boys dorm there's a Leonin (big lion people) War Cleric. He's a loud and rowdy jock, acts like Reinhardt from Overwatch, because he is. Noble family all about honor and combat and blah blah. Then there's a Tiefling (devil boy) Jazz Bard, with a trumpet. He's cool as -blam!-. Rich noble family. And last is a Hexblood (his mom's Baba Yaga or something) Druid. He's a chill witchy stoner boy. Not me. And in the ladies dorm there's the standard nerd wizard, but she's a Halfling (Hobbit). Super cheerful and nice bookworm. An Aasimar (angel girl) Sorceress Mean Girl who's rich parents fund the school. She, the Bard, and the Cleric are the popular bullies. Then there's my little egdelord! Shadar Kai (Shadow Elf) Hexblade Warlock, Remelia "Remy" Shedaershye! Backstory stuffs in spoiler
In the DMs world the Shadar Kai who escaped the Shadowfell became a nation of pirates and the Empress was basically like "Yo I don't wanna deal with you, turn your ships on my enemies and I'll make you royalty" and we were like "Cool beans finger guns." So my family are the Greyjoys and I'm secretly a pirate princess. Our leaders gain status with respect, which is earned through power. Magic is power, and I suck at it! So my parents basically shipped me off saying "Git Gud or go away you embarrassment." And because I couldn't find an actual picture of Shadar Kai I liked I just used this fanart of Harrowhark from the Locked Tomb books, so now it's established that instead of tattoos and piercings we wear bones and paint our faces.
There's also some NPC students but who cares about them. Moving on! The first night we just toured the Academy, a huge old structure in the capital city of an Empire, but it's a neutral entity that accepts students from anywhere. Picked our tiny closets in the dormitory towers and socialized a bit before some older students dragged us out after hours to Magic Fight Club! They basically just wanted to laugh at us for being so weak. I won 2 rounds and then was put up against the War Cleric. He's got 18 AC with Chainmail and a Shield, plus 17 Constitution. He rushed up and cast Inflict Wounds for 19 of my 11 hit points, celebrating immediately. But I have resistance to that damage and only took 9, so I stabbed him with a crit and a Hex! I rolled garbage damage tho so he bonked me on the head to finish me. Some healers healed everyone and we all went to bed. Next day was classes. In Alchemy we brewed up potions! I rolled bad and made a 1d4 healing potion that's also poisonous! In Enchanting I rolled so bad I got nothing! And last we made our own Cantrips! This one took the longest choosing effects and rolling for the details. Mine is a mini Silence I'm calling Hush: a bonus action to cast, lasts until my next turn, and only has a range of Self with a 10 foot radius. Great for breaking and entering, shutting someone up, and bullying casters in Melee range! I bullied the Sorceress with it a bit for funsies. Some other classes we didn't roleplay out were just lectures on the various schools of magic and stuff, you know, like a school of some kind. Cleric and Bard went to the gym to spar, Druid and I blazed it up in the stairwell, Sorceress hung out with teachers, Wizard started a book club that I joined. We ended the session returning to our rooms, but next session I'm planning to slip out and snoop around a bit in the night. There's an obligatory Restricted Section of the library I wanna check out. Probably forgetting some things but eh, this is pretty long anyway. Just thought it was neat and I haven't talked about D&D here in a bit so here have words.

 • This is a really fun sounding campaign. Although I must admit I don’t play mage much and my favorite casting class is paladin, which may have too little access to magic for such an idea, it sounds really cool. But this reminds me of a time where I discovered, in a mad mages dungeon; a labyrinth littered in traps for looting larceners such as myself, a school where he taught many foul and evil pupils in the ways of spell-slinging. I was playing a dwarven mage who was ostracized from his clan and a tad insane. So I joined this school so I could learn what I could, and get closer to the mad mage himself. Creating spells should be a fun challenge. It’s almost just as fun in my opinion to create a new spell as it is to create a new maneuver, fighting style or strategy to beat a powerful foe. My favorite (and only) 5e spell I’ve made has to be the mighty power word sword. Plus, as an added benefits, such spells can be scribed on scrolls and sold for a ton of shinies if they are good!
