Realistic Picture of Destiny and Bungie Hype
These are some interesting charts provided by Google Trends. It tracks public interest on any major topic based off of search queries.

The peaks on this chart correspond to
1) Destiny Reveal (Feb 2013, highest peak)
2) E3 Gameplay Reveal (June 2013, 2nd highest)
3) Beta Announcement (Oct 2013, 3rd highest)
This next chart shows the relation of Destiny hype compared to past Halo game hype.

The major peaks correspond as follows
1) Halo 3 Release (Oct/Nov 2007, highest level of hype in Bungie history)
2) Halo Reach Release (Sept 2010, 2nd highest level of hype in Bungie history)
It is worth noting the "Destiny Peak" on the first chart showing up on the Bungie chart at the early part of 2013. It is an 18 relative to the 100 of the highest peak (Halo 3 release).
Obviously these charts only track Google data. I posted these because I find metrics/analytics really interesting and I was curious about the data for this game. Every game hits it's peak hype at the release date. It will be interesting to see the rest of this year progress and to see how the integration of Destiny to Bungie.net will impact this data.
Here is an interesting one. This is a comparison of search trends for Halo, Destiny, Bungie, and Titanfall:

I changed "Destiny Bungie" to "Destiny" since I have never searched for Destiny this way....and it is right on par with Halo in the comparisons and ahead of Titanfall by a wide margin. I realize this includes a lot of people searching general destiny but still. When I search for destiny, all I type is Destiny.

Also, for the sake of transparency, you can't [i]really [/i]compare Destiny's numbers with Halo numbers. Halo was (and is) a different beast. With A LOT of clout and brand recognition behind it. At one point, Halo was the driving force behind MS selling consoles and those number reflect that. [b]As for this forum and any potential negativity (anti-hype) towards Bungie or Destiny:[/b] The truth of the matter is,[i] Bungie is in transition[/i]. Same goes for the bungie.net forum. A year from now the community as a whole will be a completely different place. New faces, new perspectives, and a renewed drive. It's our jobs to help usher that in and [i]not[/i] stand in the way of the changing tide. - There will always be cynics, naysayers, and those who are resistant. That's just how it goes. - There is always the possibility that someone may not like Destiny, for one reason or another. However come launch time, those how are [i]still[/i] [u]strongly[/u] opposed to Destiny will have to find a new home. Bungie.net should be a place for the fans. Where they can constructively discuss, celebrate, and debate over Bungie's games.

4 RepliesWell Bungie sort of shot itself in the foot during 2013. People were very interested after the GDC. Then the trailer confirmed the GDC and then the E3 gave everyone this wonderful glimpse into the painting. Then.... Nothing. Just a focus on PVP and not even good one. The exploration aspect never manifested and it's been pretty lackluster on updates for a new IP. The forums goto hell thanks to Offtopic hating the fact that mods are doing nothing so they decide to push them to adopt normal forum moderation. But by then it's too late. The Destiny forum has been basically ransacked by troll posts. Driving off conversation. Then the RPG element isn't even worth discussion thanks in part to the former Halo fan base despising anything that takes away from Halo. So it's this constant give and take from new users wanting to explore a new Ip to older users wanting the same experience that secured them as Bungie fans. So it's a big cluster -blam!- as usual, but things are starting to turn around. Lately there has been some substantive discussion and better info like the Game Informer articles are starting to take hold in the forums thanks in part to the moderation starting to be enforced and the lid coming off Destiny slowly in 2014. Hopefully Bungie will come out swinging with another GDC presentation and a powerful E3 performance in the next few months. 2013 will be a forgotten shadow two hours into the Beta. But they need to get going on getting that Hype train ratcheted up.

This is the Google Trends chart for "Halo" and aggregates search terms for every Halo game under the one banner. This definitely indicates a trend of the hype being wrapped around the release date of games, and according to this "Halo 2" had the most buzz at the release. This chart corresponds somewhat, but not strongly with the "Bungie Hype History"

1 ReplyYou can't compare Halo 3's release to Destiny's reveal. You can only compare it to Destiny's release. Which while Halo 3's was indeed larger at the time, it's important to remember most people think more about the franchise than the developer. To most casual gamers out there, they think more about the name Halo than Bungie. Which kind of means Destiny has no real meaning to them. At the same time, tons of past fans were plenty disappointed in Reach and are very reluctant to give Destiny a shot, most of them saying they don't care, or assuming it will suck without even looking at it. (Also, if you search for the Keyword 'Halo' you will see that Halo 2 was more popular under that search when it was released than Halo 3 was)
