We should be able to play space invaders in the loading screen or use them like in the first kingdom hearts! This is next Generation for Christ sake
Edit 2: I am aware ships have literal points. I mean that they have no meaningful purpose. Now ples, stahp with teh joeks, m9.
Edit:
Alright, It seems that I have caused a massive shit-storm here. I've heard many of the community's ideas and input (I greatly appreciate it) and I have given some of my own. Please, before you post, read some of the comments.
I'm aware that you need a ship to go into outer space. I'm fine with aquiring the Arcadia Ship (Starter), But what gives you the drive to get OTHER ships? They all move the same, sound the same and they all do the same job. Unless we could customize our ship, like engravings on the side, custom paint, flame color and trail color, even interior design to play poker in the ship would all be awesome. But we see nothing at all like that in the game!
Now, To respond some of your questions,
"If ships are pointless, by your logic that makes armor, shaders and emblems pointless too?" and similar questions.
Okay, I can accept that as an answer for shaders, emblems and things like that, but you're telling me that your okay with the role that a starship, your own starship that your "legend" is in does nothing else but take you from point a to b? You don't want space battles? Exploration of the reef? Even an ambush by the hive ton ship where you're captured and you have to break out and barely make it out alive when the ship explodes? Are you really okay with ships only being in the role of loading screens? It would be nice. But right now, ships are just awful and I just don't even see the reason why they shouldn't remove the option to customize them. They take up a slot in your characters armor and equipment screen! It is important if it's there. But alas, ooh loading screen hyperspace shot I've seen so many times already. Why not just have everybody have the same ship, it would change NOTHING. I just want Bungie to be aware of the possible things they can do. All sorts of scenarios. But right now, I don't see them with passion or drive. It baffles me.
"It sure beats a basic loading screen?"
You all are seriously fine with that? I'd much rather prefer a slide show of images in context with the ghosts lines. I'd much rather prefer a cutscene of different angles of our guardian in the ship with different reactions to the task at hand, like a gasp or a visible dread in the Sword of Crota mission. I'd much rather see something that would keep me interested in the text. Even a cutscene with your guardian walking from the tower hanger and into your ship while the ghost is describing the details to you and your guardian is nodding his/her head while they go out in the horizon is MILES more interesting than the typical hyperspace shot. Not only does it show off your guardian, you can see all of the vistas of The tower. Bungie, show off your set pieces in cinematic fashion as well! But involve the player in it as well, make us want to be interested in it! You play Destiny to the end, about 6 to 8 hours. About 1 hour of that is loading screens. And even then, these missions don't tie together, your ship is always in the same position every ti me, they could've done so much to keep the interest of the player, but instead we get an average hyper space shot or orbiting shot and get fed with half assed exposition and the same scene over and over again. I want dynamic loading screens. That is what I'd prefer.
That is what I expect a triple A game made by Bungie. I'd like for a feature to be added that allows us to start in the Tower, or even in the PvP menu. That'd make things flow so much faster.
Also, I want all of you to remember that this can be done. Recall back to Halo: Reach. The mission in space. Imagine that, and more in Destiny. Imagine the exploration. Maybe you'd find a run down, abandoned ship. You'd explore it and find the Fallen scavenging it, and once you clear them out you get loot and possible side stories as a reward. Even PvP would benefit from this!
I know some of you are turned off by vehicle warfare, but really think about this! A battle front styled pvp or even like Battlefield! It sure as hell is so much more interesting than using fusion rifles all day.
Listen guys, I don't want you guys to think of me as an asshole. I really want to like this game, and it's true that ships aren't the only thing wrong in this game. I just want Bungie to be aware of the potential they have in their game. Not just ships, but many more things in the game! I just hope others see this the same way I do. We should be addressing Bungie, demanding a response about this game. It's not just about the ships, but the game. "What the hell happened my sci fi adventure game?"
We still have a window of opportunity. There can be hope for this game. The expansion packs, primarily the second one. If we keep asking the hard questions, if the community keeps grilling Bungie on their shortcomings, then maybe, JUST MAYBE, we'll get the game we all fell in love with in 2013.

I have started saving blueprints in the vault. For some reason I feel a "Bring 10 ships blueprints" event coming on.
-
They have the same purpose as Emblems, Shaders, and Class Items. Personalization.
-
Ships are just cosmetics to show off to other people which I couldn't care less about since I just got my legendary ship from the raid and it is sweet!
-
So? Beards are pointless but that doesn't stop the whole community going mental for them.
-
Or why not incorporate ships in pvp (dog fights in space). But yes, ships are just cosmetic crap for your friends to see in orbit.
-
This whole game is pointless.
-
My ship can do the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs!
-
Edited by Deroxx: 10/1/2014 2:41:52 PMThey should have different cargo holds and be able to support us on the surface with amunition drop or an airstrike.
-
The kingdom hearts bit would be fun chance to get some
-
Yes they are pointless but they do look cool
-
I can't even see my ship.
-
All they do is look cool. That's it. Nothing else. At all.
-
Yeah.... And they expect you to pay for them!
-
Why would you ever mention the horrid poch mark on an otherwise brilliant game? (Gummi Ships)
-
Yeah. My friend was pissed because after he finished the raid all he got was a legendary ship and his friends got cool gear.
-
Besides the fact that they should have many many more different variations of them, or you should be able to customize color or appearance, I'm ok with them. Even if I could fly my ship from Planet to Planet the novelty would wear off after a week or so. Much like Skyrim, where I could ride my horse to a location, which was fun at first, but why do that when I can just fast travel..
-
The ships look cool but what's the point :(
-
I think the different models are a great idea. Even if they are just cosmetic. It was a nice surprise when I got my current one out of a chest on Mars.
-
It's something to make the kinda ridiculous load times look prettier. What would you rather have, a black screen with a loading bar on the bottom?
-
I recommend newcomers to read the comments and the replies below. And post if you agree with me. Sorry for the inconvenience.
-
Now where just bitching to bitch
-
Agreed!
-
It's just there to look cool dude. Kinda like character customization
-
You can look cool while waiting for a Strike Mission or Crucible to load for other players. Personally I like that you can at least get different looking ships and aren't all stuck with the same 5-20 different ship skins for the entire game.
-
Ships as loading screens are fine. Would it be great to fly around? Yes, but I would prefer some focus on story and more diverse scenarios first.
-
Halo reach sabre style firefight with fallen ships or reef awoken ships simulation in crucible?or maybe in campaign before you visit the queen and she wants to test you.
