Epitaph - Still Hiding Secrets?

Well now that we know what the Guardians were supposed to look like, I think it is safe to assume that the large hologram on the MP map Epitaph is, in fact, a representation of said Guardians. Guardian Concept Art -------------------- Epitaph Hologram Epitaph has always intrigued the crap out of me...it is soooo different from any other Halo MP level and it seems like it was just thrown into the game. If you look at the surrounding landscape of the map...its all desert, but there are obvious bare spots where you can see further forerunner architecture...including the large structure at the base of the tower. What exactly is down there? External Map View What also puzzles me, is the fact that there is no visible structure in the sky whatsoever. No Halo ring...no Ark...nothing. This leads one to believe that the map MUST be based on a planet...or better yet, a shield installation much like Onyx... Here is the map description withing Halo 3:
Some believe the Forerunner preferred desolate places. Others suggest that few other sites survived the Flood.
Now hold on just a minute here...so Epitaph survived the Flood? Interesting... The name of the map is interesting as well... Epitaph? It is obviously a reference to a grave or cemetery of some sort...but a cemetery for what? What is buried beneath the sand? What was soooo important to the Forerunner that they constructed such a large structure in order to honor it after it's death? It makes one wonder what else Bungie is still hiding from us...there are secrets still left in this game...so many unanswered questions... If anyone has any other thoughts or ideas...please share them!

 • yeah i think so too it is wierd like there is elite blood on one of the railings... either that or it was a sign of a long lost battle between forerunners and covenant

 • Guardian and Epitaph have always seemed distantly linked in my mind. The structures are quite similar and the Dino-Birds in the distance. Possibly different regions of a planet. Also Guardian the map links to the Guardian hologram (or Mendicant Bias as is also believed) in the OP.

 •
Posted by: MINION223 From the external map view it almost looks like the gateway that opened up to the arc and the structure in the middle looks like the ship that the chief came back to earth on.
Honestly...I see it now. [Edited on 05.08.2009 9:27 AM PDT]

 • Okay, I have two points, This is a picture of epitaph It looks like a buried forerunner dreadnaught, if you have played halo wars then it looks like that. And it looks like the lines are curving upwards. if my memory serves, wasn't the last spartens trapped in a micro dyson-sphere, a bowl shaped planet around a white dwarf star, where the horizon curves Upwards. Maybe Epitaph is on that Micro dyson sphere. Just a theory

 • With the 7 lines around the outside and the tower in the centre it reminds me of the Ark portal with the dreadnaught in the middle...

 • Now, I've found that the Guardian description is quoted:
Millennia of tending has produced trees as ancient as the Forerunner structures they have grown around."
So that is the similarity between Guardian and Epitaph: the Forerunner structures. Edit: Just saying about the maps. Guardian and Epitaph do look pretty similar except for the fact that Guardian has trees, but the quote says they grew on there.....never know [Edited on 05.07.2009 8:53 PM PDT]

 • someone had the same idea i did and it seemed to make sense, the pic of the guardian and the hologram on epitaph have many similarities, and the speculation was that the hologram was the "open" version of a guardian, so what if the hologram is the epitaph? what i mean is that this place survived the flood, based on the blood and the fact that it's in a desolate place and the forunners made it as a citadel type of sacred place, is the hologram is open it could be an atttack, stance to symbolize the defense of the sacred place, or possibly be a memorial to said guardian that err guarded the map :P so what i think is that the map itself is a place the forunners kept sacred and the guardian that defended it from the flood was destroyed but they left the hologram epitaph to remember it as a symbol of hope and the stability of the forunners..or somthing like that, other than this i never really like epitaph, good job on getting people interested XD....edited to eliminate the wall...^.^ [Edited on 05.07.2009 8:37 PM PDT]

 • Also, I've found out there is an Easter Egg on Sandtrap where sentinel beams are fired out of the Easter Egg and the same for Sandbox. I know this isn't greatly on the topic, but it does show a relationship between Sandbox and Sandtrap.

 • Okay, I've done my research after reading the whole entire thread and found out that Epitaph is not one of the towers on Sandbox or Santrap due to how it looks from the outside. I will continue researching all about the relationship between Sandbox and Epitaph, etc. Edit: Researching on Epitaph for the caption on a view of the map it says the cathedral is at the top and it looks like a church, but im not convinced on it really being a church. • I'll add some truth to this thread.
Epitaph is set in an enclosed "Cathedral-like" Forerunner structure over 2,000 feet tall with a ceiling vaulting nearly 200 feet into the air, and may possibly be located on The Ark. The structure's blue-green glowing 'windows' are actually made up of holographic Forerunner text symbols. The gold hologram in the northern end of the structure is rumored to be Mendicant Bias. Some rumors and clues state that Epitaph is in fact the "tomb" of said AI.
Also notice the "citadel" is on the top And also, the presence of Elite blood says that there was a skirmish of sorts. They could of fought Sentinels or Brutes....

 •
Posted by: DTA MoonDawg There are many theories that Epitaph is where Mendicant Bias is laid. The hologram is said to be Bias himself. I don't know if he was a Guardian or not since I don't know how sophisticated and intelligent Guardians were, but I like to believe that it's him. Also, there is a strange secret on Epitaph. Have you ever found the secret door? I found a video about it on YouTube. It seems Epitaph was originally designed to be taller but was scrapped late in the process and was replaced with soft texture. It's really interesting. Maybe it was where they planned to place something but didn't have time. Who knows?
I think your right I have also found a hidden door somewhere......

Im trying to find the one on snowbound!
i believe snowbound is a shield world. look in the middle of the map, in the basement thing. if youve played halo wars it looks exactly like the inner, shield rim part! @ : all who say mendicant is at epitaph i highly doubt it. mendicant is alive. he was on the dreadnaught then the Ark! •
Posted by: Valiant91 All right, Guardian itself was supposed to be "originally" a campaign level were you had to face off against a Forerunner construct. Maybe Epitaph was supposed to like that too?
ehhh i dont think so, but definetly a possibility.
