Edit: There is a post on this post going on over on Reddit. For all the negative light this original post paints Reddit in (and to the Reddit participants here, you're not really taking any moral high ground over there are you...), it has led to some pockets of actual discussion on the fundamental differences in the 2 entities and why each is the way it is.
There's no arguing that we have a rougher edge over here, but we also have a lot of really great ideas posted here on topics that aren't allowed to see the light of day over there. I also think that we tend to speak our minds more and they tend to hide more behind their downvote system. Anyway it's funny how this opposite ends of town feud blew up, but it's good it's led to debate.
---------original post---------
We've all heard it. How terrible we are as a community here on bnet. And we've heard time and again from your developers how they look to Reddit for community feedback as thoughts and ideas die on your own forums.
Now things post-Cozmo are better and he's been by far the best thing to happen to bnet in the last year, but there's still this overarching perception that we're the red headed stepchildren of the Destiny community.
Well I decided to try out Reddit to see exactly what that community is like and it became crystal clear why most of your developers prefer to hang out there. It's censored to the Hive filled moon and back. Rather than just go thru my experience, I'm going to post my last Reddit post which I fully expect will be removed by tomorrow.
It's not really surprising Bungie prefers this feedback environment. A new users initial impression of Reddit
Hello DTG community,
I'm new to Reddit. Been a long time member of the bnet community and decided to see what Reddit is like because there's finally a phone app for it.
I've only been on a few days now and am still getting used to the very different setup and formatting, but it takes time to acclimate to new forums, so no big deal.
What is a big deal is that apparently there's a lock on discussion of certain topics. I understand you probably don't want your forums to be the boundless nerf posts that populate bnet, but it seemed from what I saw that posts don't gain the same traction here and that likes are more important than # of comments (and so curate themselves to a large extent).
That being said, I also realized being new that until I know people here, I probably won't get too many comments on posts just because people gravitate to things and people they're familiar with. So over the last few days I made a few posts. One on how underrated Fusion Rifles were pre-update. One asking opinions of the update and one on a simple solution to implementing matchmaking across all Destiny activities.
Then I login tonight after work to a message that posting an idea for how to implement matchmaking violates the forum rules because it's on a Bungie Please list (all links to said list result in page errors). My guess is this is Reddit's version of the bnet community wish list. If that's the case, I'm not posting asking for matchmaking or asking if there should be. I'm offering a thought out solution to implementing it.
So at this point, I'm at a loss as to what the functionality of the Destiny Reddit is supposed to be. Are we just allowed to discuss what we did today in Destiny? I love the game and it's amazingly fun... for about 2 weeks out of every month. Destiny does a lot right, but there are also things it needs to be better at and now is when those things should be being discussed. They're heavy into development of Destiny 2 right now and so if there are things that we as a community (and I mean a community of Destiny fans regardless of what sites or forums we frequent) want to see changed or implemented in Destiny 2, now is the time to be letting Bungie know and trying to engage them on topics.
So I tried to discuss a topic that I and many others care a lot about with this community of Destiny fans and offer up a simple solution to a sometimes devisive topic and it was removed.
The part I truly don't understand is that there were 8 total comments and none for probably 15 hours. The post wasn't blazing up the forum, it was lost amongst hundreds of others submitted at that time, so why make a point to remove a dead and buried post that wasn't going anywhere else?
That's the part I can't reconcile and honestly it makes me wonder if the topic is off limits because matchmaking would inevitably hurt r/fireteams.
So that was a negative experience, but in spite of it I started browsing other posts. Someone posted asking if DoP was actually nerfed to which I replied it wasn't.
Then I saw a Fusion Rifle video post with no likes or comments (I love Fusion Rifles) and they were using The Vacancy which is one of my favorites. So I watched the video as they used it and Shadestep to annihilate a couple people and commented how awesome it was to see someone else who loves fusions and how nice the video was.
... Only to get an error telling me I'm "doing that too often" (commenting) and try again in 7 minutes.
So now I'm really confused. I posted an answer in a thread asking a question, watched a video in another and tried to say nice job and I'm being too social?
I appreciate that people here are Destiny fans and as someone who hears all the talk on bnet about how terrible we are as a community over there, I had hoped to come over here and find that fans are fans and we all just want to talk Destiny and help make it great.
I don't think I've found that and honestly I feel like an outsider that's walked into the wrong neighborhood and the locals are circling the wagons and locking doors as the sheriff shows me the road out of town.
I didn't expect to come over here and instantly be ingrained in this community, but I didn't expect it to be so Pleasentville either. Maybe I'll stick it out and try to have another place to talk Destiny with people, but I'm feeling an awful lot like a Sneetch with no star.
The first thing I saw when logging back into bnet was a post banging the drum for raid matchmaking and I thought it's good to be home.

We definitely don't think of our own forum users like "second class citizens". You are putting a lot of stock into one designer saying he liked how reddit was organized. There are 600+ of us here at Bungie, and we all have different preferences on what sites to use. The main contact for getting feedback to the devs is through me, and I spend most of my time here. That's not to say I am married to Bnet exclusively. I do <3 you, but my jurisdiction spans across the entire Destiny community. I still make time browse Reddit, reply to people on Twitter, and even read comments on Facebook and Instagram. If there is a conversation to be had about Destiny on the internet I try to seek it out and read it. So please don't see yourselves as warring nations competing for our attention. You all have it, and you all have a common goal of making Destiny better. I think we have made some progress together, but there is still a lot of room for further improvements. Post your ideas here.

Reddit is Bungies walk among the fans where absolutely ZERO talk about change is allowed and only congrats are. Luke reclines there a LOT. He just soaks up the adoration. As does Deej. They only visit here once in a while to drop the occasional bomb - then walk away back to Reddit where they're safe from the fallout. Keep paying them and they'll keep living the high life. Stop paying them and theyll drop their mojitos, promise their adoring fans they'll be back, scramble to battle stations and maybe look like they give a -blam!-.
-
This is the sort of thing that, I hope, Bungie sees and understands in this new Parsons era. I fear the people under him are too ingrained in their old ways and will still avoid actual feedback and keep relying on yes-men like Reddit mods. While I join in praising Cozmo for actually delving into B.net, when they were looking to hire somebody to do DeeJ's job for him they hired Coz off of Reddit! Bungie has made steps to use multiple sources, and sadly their own forums were one they ignored pre-Cozmo and pre-CEO. Many signs since the CEO decision point toward a more communicative and more receptive Bungie. I hope they continue to evolve and improve, just as we hope Destiny continues to evolve and improve.

I've browsed The Destiny Subreddit, never joined as I really don't post much on these forums either. So these comments are what I can say in my little experience browsing it. While some of the topics discussed are really interesting and informative, the times I've been on there, it does have a 'pleasantville' vibe to it. 'Look at the ghost I made out papier mache, or my Destiny fan stories' and so on, or 'how awesome is ........ ' Don't get me wrong, I do a reasonable amount of Tabletop gaming/role-playing games and so love that sort of thing, but there are far better universes to work from than the Destiny one. Plus, it feels a lot like the 'hipsters sitting in a really good pub/bar drinking a can of Red Stripe' vibe, if that reference makes sense to anyone. These forums are really toxic, but then at the end of the day there is a lot to complain about.

Just opened the subreddit to check it out and majority of the first page has nothing to do with destiny...kinda weird

I don't give a shit about which site is better, I use both, I just wanna say Raid Matchmakin is a fucking awful idea

Edited by Vektor0: 4/21/2016 2:34:14 PMI don't quite get it. Every forum has rules, and you accidentally violated one. It happens. But somehow, you made the logic leap that it's some kind of conspiracy to keep /r/Firteams alive?... Reddit.com has a cap of 1 post per 10 minutes to curtail spam, and you tried to exceed that. Now you know. If you wanted to have a serious, legit discussion of Bnet vs. DTG subreddit, I'm all for that, but that's not what your post is. Your post is "I didn't know how something worked and I couldn't make it work beautifully with minimal effort, therefore the thing is a joke."

This is cringe

fix your -blam!-ing light its not right noobs get low light but take less dmg when hight light take more wtf is this shit you call pvp thats just bull if not fix i quit and you sever are still shit

Edited by Caligrown85: 4/21/2016 2:45:00 PMReddit is a place to have a mature discussion. It's not for immature rants. Grow up and learn how to have a discussion. Also, here is a thought. Try looking at other Reddit pages and see how people are discussing other topics, then go back and look at your so called thread. No one wants to discuss anything with over emotional whiners looking to bash other people.

Hi Sols. One of the Destiny Reddit mod's here. First off, it sucks that you had a bad experience. We tried to help you out via our Modmail but you may have missed our messages. I'd like to say a couple things here, because as a volunteer it is kind of hard to see a community that I've helped manage and grow be called a "joke" publicly on the official forums. First off, a lot of your issues stemmed from the fact you have a new account. Reddit is a huge website and has a lot of users browsing through its pages. Because of this, spamming is a very big deal, and to help combat people making new accounts and posting garbage everywhere, Reddit has an in-built restriction placed on new accounts. This goes for the entire site, but will eventually stop (check back in a week and you'll find you can comment as often as you'd like). Secondly, the BungiePls list (the so-called, censored topics) are actually a community curated list and only the most over-done suggestions are reserved for the list. For those curious, the list is here: https://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/wiki/bungieplz And the criteria for a topic entering the list is at the top. Lastly, your point on the /r/fireteams sub was... Interesting. We haven't removed the topic of Raid Matchmaking because it would hurt the Fireteams subreddit, which only exists so LFG posts don't flood the main subreddit. We don't make money of anything reddit related, so we aren't concerned with a Subreddit's relevancy. Raid Matchmaking is a suggestion that has been around since Vanilla Destiny, we had it pretty regularly popping up on the front page and many requested something like BungiePls due to this particular topic. Currently, this post and a mirroring post on the Destiny Subreddit sit essentially mocking each other, something I think is ridiculous considering we're all here out of love for the same game right? Some folks like Bnet, others like Reddit. Just because they're different doesn't mean you need to love one and hate the other. Those are my thoughts, I'm not speaking for the entire Reddit mod team but if you or anyone else here would like to ask some questions, feel free.

Edited by Twheeeeezy17: 4/22/2016 12:18:56 PMI think the best comparison is: Reddit is your parents site. times were swell, people went steady, you did what you were told with out thinking to object, sodas at Ed's drug store were only a nickel Bnet is straight unadulterated in your face all American freedom -blam!- you rock n roll. We will speak up to who we want, when we want. If you don't like it, then leave. Nothing is getting swept under the rug over here. This is honestly with no censorship over here. If Bnet is too raw and too much freedom, then there's always room for chocolate malts and varsity sweaters at mommy and daddy's Reddit.

Great minds discuss ideas. We don't have to be exclusive or territorial. It's nice to be comfortable on a website or in a community, but it's also a good idea to expand your mind to new ideas and people when you can. Everything should be taken in moderation.
-
Well boohoo you can't post one whine and complain thread after another there and get e-famous. Big deal.
-
Bnet would be a much better place if the "ninjas" and "moderators" actually did their job. So many good posts are sabotaged by either emotional idiots or people who just try to talk the post to death. This has happened to me countless times. It gives me the feeling sometimes that Bungie has a team of smurfs ready just in case someone makes a good point and it gets a lot of attention.
-
Have and never will be a fan of Reddit. It's a Bungie game, everything leads you here unless you go looking for it. Why direct players here if Reddit is what counts? Any "forum" that censors posts isn't the place you should want to be either. Big difference between taking down garbage posts and censorship.
-
Bud, I think everything about this is misguided. I tried to explain it to them over there but my post just got buried in downvotes. DTG sees themselves as the mature creative and helpful forum. Bnet is extremely creative and helpful...under the community creations and help sections... Comparing their universal thread specifically to the feedback forum here makes bnet look like a cesspool and is not a realistic comparison. That being said. THIS is the spot for feedback. They act like they have good ideas and suggestions....please. There is a topic on the front page now. "Bungie please add voting to strike playlist!" Great idea...16 months ago. Either way don't get too caught up it in. They are a good site and good people, but Reddits format in general promotes sunshine and rainbows to try to get traction on criticism.
-
Reddit does not promote any negativity. Therefore criticism of the game falls on deaf ears there. The front page is just montages and art. AKA circle jerk.
-
It's because this forum is full of whiny little bitches that do nothing but tell Bungie how terrible the game they can't stop playing is... You know, like you do everyday.
-
No to all matchmaking
-
I don't think I even have an account on reddit but i go there for information a lot and i always think that it's like strolling through a nice town and that this place is like a ghetto in the middle of a riot.

You need a publisher for this novel

Reddit has nothing better to talk about but this thread lol
