A few days ago one of my friends made a Bungie account, changed his Bungie name, and sent me a friend request. According to him, other people in Destiny 2 see his new name but I still see his old name. I still have the friend request with his old name and I can neither accept nor deny it.
On bungie.net clicking either button just turns them both red and trying to accept gives the error "Friend request failed". Additionally, clicking on the request takes me to his profile with his new name.
In game he appears under the Bungie Friend Requests section with either his old name or new name, seemingly at random. Trying to accept or reject the friend request there seems to do nothing and while playing I occasionally get the new friend request notification along the bottom of my screen. The weirdest part is that searching his new Bungie name in game causes his name on the friend request and fireteam to flicker between his new and old names. Searching his new name gives "Player Found", while searching his old name gives "Player Not Found".
I've tried sending him friend requests to his new name but he can't see them. He tried sending me new friend requests but I can't see them either. We can only join each other by searching for the other's Bungie name and inviting them to a fireteam that way. How can I remove this broken friend request and send/receive a working one?
