You could have gameplay focused on metamorphosis, as in charging up transformations to send yourself into a brief altered state (kinda like a super meter). In terms of bosses, everyone loves a good old boss transformation, though keep them few and far between and when you make them, make them big, and I would definitely recommend mixing some bosses with just straight up take down the boss, and some bosses with multiple phases and health gates with platforming or combat (or both) sections in between. For gear, I would definitely recommend adding some sort of sprite or fairy system where you have little guys that follow you around and give you either active abilities or passive buffs, but you can only go into battle with so many. You could make it that you could temporarily exceed the limit mid-mission by acquiring fairies in the fight too. In terms of aesthetic, it would be cool if the premise was sort of Viking explorers discovering new realms, you could even tie in Erik the Red and his search for the New World, but add a magical/mythological twist.
You should also have plenty of secrets, because those are cool, and add a Wendigo, because those are cooler.
• Ooh, the idea of transformations could be fun. Even more fun, the gauge to build transformations could be specifically based around doing whatever it is your class is designed to do: The Attacker gauge builds by dealing damage to the boss The Defender gauge builds by preventing damage to allies The Offensive Support gauge builds by casting Time Beam and whatever other abilities they may have The Defensive Support gauge builds by healing or buffing allies Then when it fills up the class temporarily transforms into some sort of mega mode. For Attacker, this is probably just a damage buff, but for Offensive Support perhaps for a limited time *all* attacks can build the Time Beam gauge. When transformed, your main attack could also become something new as well. For the faeries, I was actually thinking of nicking Terraria's accessory system, and giving them to the role of faeries sounds fun. Especially if they're steampunk faeries. Rather than crafting new faeries, you could craft them their favorite meal to get them to join you. Still the same crafting system, but with fun flavor text. :p For the aesthetic, someone mentioned steampunk down below, so I'm still leaning towards that for now. My working title for the project is now Steampunk Mages. Yeah, a big part of the game being good or not would be boss design. Early on, you fight what are better described as minibosses, but then later you'll be fighting full on bosses. Most every boss will have a second phase, but some of them will transform, sometimes the "second phase" would be destroying the first boss and a second boss coming into play, and there may even be some sort of boss rush gauntlets, too. Variety is key!
