I am going to leave this open for discussion for the masses as to what the controversy surrounding the possible Halo 3 endings might really mean, but here is my take:
Spartan-117 is a deeply identifiable character if we look at him in his humanized aspects (the other side to the war machine that we all know and love). He has a family (the other Spartans) that he has kept losing over the course of the war, his life was focused on victory ever since he learned to walk and talk, and has a deep ideal of putting his mission ahead of his own personal safety. A lot of people have suggested that the Master Chief be killed, but here is why it is a bad idea:
1. There may be no one left - With the MAC Grid destroyed, cities burned to the ground, the UNSC reduced to an underground resistance movement, and the Covenant everywhere, there is a great chance that the Admiralty of the UNSC (including our man, Lord Hood) may be dead. Who will lead humanity through the end if this is true?: The Arbiter won't (he's got the Seperatists to lead), Sgt. Major Johnson or Commander Keyes may not (they are a tiny bit underdeveloped at this point). That leads only up to the character known as John-117.
2. Controversy and Cliches - Let's face it, Bungie likes to surprise us, but the death of the main hero is something that has been rehashed throughout popular culture and does not really seem feasible given the fact that we control the Chief. Imagine also of how pissed off you would be at this ending:
You are surrounded by enemies as you fade into darkness.
Commander Keyes - "Damn it! We've failed. Spartan-117 is down. Earth is lost!"
Point 2: The Arbiter is more likely to go out on a rampage because of the fact that his whole life was living to serve a lie. I could see him dying in a blaze of glory while taking down Truth or setting off the knockout blow against Gravemind.
3. Rampage - Drama is always great when we see a friend of the main hero die. What about if John-117 loses everything and goes on a rampage? It was mentioned at the very end of the Fall of Reach of his thirst for vengeance. So why not carry it out in Halo 3 by making him a lone wolf with a few marines, or have him lose his mother figure, Doctor Catherine Elizabeth Halsey? (She had a principle of the sacrifice of one for many.) I could imagine a final bombshell of Commander Keyes finally being revealed as Dr. Halsey's daughter, the good Doctor tells John-117 to look after her, and Halsey buys time for the Master Chief to trigger the final defeat of the Flood.
Post your own ideas and thoughts here. Let's debate.

Wow, you're illustrating quite a few good points there. It at least makes more sense the the huge batch of cliche subjects we've been getting lately.
-
I think that this would be the ultimate. The Chief and Arbiter hate each others' guts, right? What if they were forced to team up on the Marines and Covenant, whom they both betrayed? The fight would be forever, and the Arbiter would eventually die, and you'd set out to avenge him, making the Chief a lone outcast.

Chuck Norris, dude, you dont respawn next to the enemy that killed you, you go back to the last checkpoint man. And were talking about the ending of the game if he died or not, not just in general, read the stuff before you post.
-
he dies all the time...then he respawns...and dies again. you cant kill a character that can come back over and over in the game it wont make sense. The enemy will be like yay we killed the demon, then you see Chief spawn behind them and say"boo". HE CANT DIE...
-
Ok, I said this before and I'll say it again, and you'll probably disagree with me, but here it is. The Halo books do not make sense, The Halo books cover a facet of the Halo universe that the game itself could not, therefore, there is a group of people, the majority, who play Halo and have not read the books, therefore, take for instance a person who plays Halo and has not read the book-- They play Halo 3's campaign all the way through, and half of the campaign explains the story, about Colonel Ackerson and Dr. Hasley, then the other half of the game is spent doing something about. Imagine, this person would be very confused, it doesnt make sense to explain half a story line in the final chapter of a game! Its like you reading the first six Harry Potter books and in the 7th it would be like this," um, Harry?yea...., theres this guy, you see, um...his name is Lord Voldemort, and, uh, yea...., you kinda got to kill him, cause he wants to, kill, you..., sorry, tough luck man."" This just doesnt make sense!! Have you ever seen another work of fiction do this!!?!?!? And if so was it good!!?? I do not see Halo3 being half a back story to the first game!! please prove me wrong if you see it a different way.
-
1. there are other spartans besides the cheif there are 3around 3 that served the battle on reach and made it back and there is one that was taken by the creater of the spartan II program. 2.the arbitar wont go on a rampage because he has a group to lead and he doesnt seem like the type of character that would go beserker and start killing evrything but he will try to kill truth 3.master cheif would never go on a rampage by seeing one of his commrades or something he loves die bcuz he would have done it by now bcuz of seeing his spartans die and im sure theres a failsafe in his suit to stop him from doing that.
-
You guys still don't get it! There is no physically possible way for them to survive! Unless Bungie comes up with something, Master Chief/ The arbiter/ Both will HAVE TO DIE!, if you can prove me wrong please do, you can say that the ARK is like a safe haven or whatever, but untill there is proof, this is the only reasonable explanation.

Maybe put the Chief into Cyro sleep angain. [Edited on 7/3/2006]

PLZ don't kill the Chief or Arbiter at the end. [*]Master Chief is the ninth, and highest, enlisted rate, (E-9) in the U.S. Navy.
-
What if the ONI spooks are still alive, MC wouldnt be the last hope, after all they are the true leaders of Earth but they would juct use MC as there weapon of MD.
-
Nice post minetek, i would rather see him die of his own accord then there being one of those "and the Master Chief and Cortana remain good friends to this day, but then humans eventually found a way to screw themselves again, and they all died. The End."
-
Good post but all u said does not show us its not possible he dies. Halo 3 is the last Halo they can do w/e with the end even if we control him i wouldnt be pissed at all. like u said he keep losing his family.......we all die one day, i rather see MC die in a glorious battle then because he went old the ending they all live until they grow old and die is even more used then the falling hero. I chose the falling HERO.
-
And how the hell could he have a funeral?!?!? This is the end of the world as we know it, him having a funeral much less anyone else surviving is like 2 billion to one against or whatever, lull thats funny, a funeral, hah
-
Do you guys really think it will end all happy? seriously, is there a way that the Master Chief could live somehow, even if the Covenant are ruined, that doesnt beat the Flood, the infectious, -always finds a way to kill you painfully- Flood, there is no way that everything will end happy, unless Bungie cooks up something good, i just think it doesnt make sense for it all to end happy, and what better way for a hero to die doing what he wants to do! Just read my version of the ending, cause this far no one has commented on it.
-
Master Chief's purpose is to defend the human race from any and all threats. As long as he fullfills his destiny he can die. You could say other threats will eventually appear but the MC cant live forever. A nice dignified military funeral would be a kind farewell to Spartan-117. I have a feeling before MC dies he will have to somehow destroy Cortana.
-
Maybe the Chief will go back into Cyro-sleep, then be revived again if there is another war. PLZ, don't kill MC or Arbiter!!!!!!!!!
-
I might not be happy if the MC or Arbitor died at the end.
-
Killing the MC at the end would NOT be cool.
-
Posted by: XxTaranakixX I really think they could kill off the Chief for several reasons: 1) As far as Master Cheif leading humanity there is little chance of that. The rank Master Chief is not exactly very high of a rank at all, in fact it may not even be an officer rank (have to check on that though) so logically there are many people still who would out rank him. MC has never been portrayed as a huge leader either, i mean seriously President Master Cheif head leader of humanity or what not...not happening
Good points. And as to Chief not being an Officer, does "Master Chief Petty Officer Of The Navy" ring a bell? Anyway, anyone who is a Lieutenant or higher is an Officer.

Theories are sooo much fun: 1. Master Chief is dying. Sad as it may be, this story has a lot of religious references in it, and what happens in religious stories?? Heroes die sacrificing their lives for the greater good. Also for those saying they wouldn't kill off the franchise, bet that they won't it'll just be another individual's story. Oh yeah Arbiter's dying too. Another religious hero. 2. You're gonna play as another character. Spartan most likely, and quite possibly a chick. She won't die. Neither will the Sarge for that matter, he's too bad ass. 3. You're gonna fire Los Halos. Gotta kill 'em all. Covies, Flood, too many bad guys not enough good guys. 4. Ark?? Covenant?? Oooohhh, Ark of the Covenant. I don't think the 'Ark' is Noah's Ark kids. I think it's a big 'anti-son-of-a--blam!- machine.' I don't usually end my posts with a Bon Jovi song but....... "Going down in a blaze of glory!!"
-
i think if this is the last one than mc gets to the ark and findes something to remote detonate all the halos but i need a massive power supply then in a last dich effort he sacrrafices his life by giving the energy frome his sute (spartans cant live with out there armor they fall apart it was in one of the books) moste of the earth has bin glassed but still 10 % of the earth population managed to survive. but if it isnt the last one he will live
-
Posted by: wasd1 Master chief cant possibly die - he is a hero
All heroes die someime!
-
Most of the points deal with Mc dieing before the "world is saved", what if he dies after? On the other hand, if I had to pick the Mc or the Arbiter dieing, I'd pick Arby - MC is the main character, but Arby is more of a character that ties into your emotions. Descisions, descisions.
-
I think the best ending would be is MC going to to the Ark where MC has to kill some prophets and covenent and has to activate the ark, and then have a halo 1 type ending where you get in a warthog and drive through the dessert sand trying to get as far as you can, and when the timer goes off if you get far enough from the activation you get a cutscene where it shows Sgt. Johnson and another soldeir with a metal detecter walk around the sand and finaly get to a place where they start digging and they find MC uncontious in the sand and the soldeir goes "is he dead?" and Johnson smiling replying " No, hes just being lazy" and the music comes on and it starts to fade away. i think that would be one kick ass ending
-
And for the lazy ones, i think that the Master Chief should activate the Halos. and that it be a real quiet ending almost, not them all getting engulfed in a barrage of Flood and Covenants.

Sorry Gunshark, i just skipped like 3 pages of info so please dont flame me if Im repeating some one else, But for the Master Chief dying? you said that he was to lovable a character to lose? But thats what makes it so much harder to deal with him dying! video games are getting to a point where the rival movies ! I just recently read an article, i dont know, probably GI, where they said that video game developers where trying to make their players feel conected to the characters of the game, like in the new Call of Duty game, they wanted to make you sad when your fellow troops died. and tthats what makes it so great! if the Master Chief dies, it has to be a peaceful ending, and i personally agree with Iceman Assasains article, the its so obvious why didnt i think of this before one. it just seems fitting that there be an ending where the master chief dies in peace, not painfully, i dont hink the forerunners would have wanted to have made themselves die painfully. i think that the Master Chief dieing would be a fitting end, and if you want to see my version of the ending its " Poll: Rate my Halo 3 ending" or whatever, i just dont see where youre coming from with this idea.
