I know this is an old game and nobody cares anymore but i still enjoy the online play, i guess maybe someone can still help me...
So the problem is that i can't play halo multiplayer anymore, everytime i try to join a server it comes up with loading screen then gathering exception data error and then halo has stopped working error... This problem happens with Halo trial, Halo CE and Halo 1.09 and i've tried reinstalling all of them.
I've been playing halo for 4 years now without any problems, i had this error few days ago and i was playing fine a day before the error happened so that propably means something happened in that one day, however i have no idea what... Pretty much the only thing i did was install AOE II and its expansion that day (for old times sake)and i really can't see any relevance... I did also change some settings to get AOE II to work in windows 7, closed explorer.exe, changed to normal windows theme etc. but i changed everything back to what they were before.
I DID get the game to work on "safe mode" though but obviously it's not really even playable on that mode... Since "safe mode" turns of all kind of graphical options maybe there's something wrong with my graphical settings? I haven't changed my ATI control panel settings or in-game settings after the day the game worked though so i can't see how that would have happened.
I doubt it has anything to do with ports either, it should just say unable to join the game or something rather than crashing the whole game if that would be the case.
TL;DR: Game crashes when trying to join a multiplayer server, happens on Halo trial, 1.09 and CE, tried reinstalling but nothing changed.
Is there any way to check what is causing the error like an error report or something, after all shouldn't it be gathering some data when it comes up with that error?

I can't see any chat or any text while playing multiplayer... This is just ridiculous now, i already tried a couple things like uninstalled all my drivers, installed msxmlenu.msi and re-installed the game and nothing happened... Is the game purposely -blam!-ing with me or something lol?
What's the native/maximum resolution of your monitor? I ask this because usually (in my experience) the inability for the text to appear while playing multiplayer is related to the resolution of one's monitor. In my experience text won't appear in multiplayer if the resolution of one's monitor is over 1600x1200. If you're monitor's resolution is higher than 1600x1200 than you could use a FoV Fixer program. I use this one for Halo 1 PC to be displayed properly on my 1920x1080 monitor.
I got it fixed now, i had to completely re-install msxmlenu.msi and now it finally works.
That's good to here.

Chat or text could be due to xlive gamertag settings make sure you have text chat enabled (it's disabled by default).

Well looks like the problem has finally been solved, so what did i do to solve it? Absolutely nothing... i have been just using my computer normally for a couple of days now without trying to solve the problem and today i just decided to give Halo a try just for the hell of it and it suddenly works... I didn't install any drivers or any updates to anything, just used my computer. What a mystery... this was the weirdest problem i've ever had in my life.
Posted by: I RaveN I several people who know what they're doing have offered to teamview you to solve the problem. @dirk, do you know when phil is going to fix modhalo?
One guy has only offered it actually and i honestly dont think anyone can help me even with teamviewer, if the problem would be easy or common, i would've found the solution already. There has to be some way to locate the errors... developers had to use some command to detect the errors so they could locate them and fix them, so isn't there a way to detect the origin of the problem? One thing that i haven't tried yet is to close all user processes from the task manager so i guess i could give it a shot to see if Halo has problems with some particular program but if it has problems with my GPU for some reason then disabling them shouldn't affect the error in any way.
Posted by: I RaveN I If you're running a shortcut and you have -devmode on it, that would be a reason. Not to be accusing, but if you did a clean reinstall, it kinda sounds like you're using a 3rd party program (ie, a hack) that's crashing it.
No, i currently have no commands on my shortcut and i'm not using any 3rd party program while running the game and even if i would then why would the multiplayer work in safe mode? I think knowing that the game works in safe mode is crucial in locating the problem but i dont know what exactly the safe mode disables (except that it disables a lot of things)... If i could disable features the safe mode disables one by one i could eventually locate the problem but the problem is that i dont know how to do it or what to do. Halo support has been obviously dead for a long time already so either i have to spend a lot of time finding the answers myself or just give up and spend my time on something else. I think i'm going to go with second option.

That would seem to be the obvious reason but i tried reinstalling already as you can see from my previous post and shouldn't reinstalling the game fix all map file errors? Single player maps work, the problem happens with all halo versions after reinstalling them all (halo trial and CE are not disk versions so there cant be disk scratches or anything) and the game loads maps fine when playing in safe mode. It seems like it has something to do with multiplayer graphics which safe mode disables... now if i could just find out what exactly is causing it...
-
Uninstalling the game and reinstalling it should fix the problem, if it does not then there is a problem with your map files that are causing the game to crash when loading them.

Windows 7 64-bit Intel i7-860@2,8Ghz ATI Radeon 5870 8GB DDR3 I keep all my drivers up to date all the time. Is there something else i should tell?

Can you post your system specifications?

Alright i tried to do a complete uninstallation of the game and i cleaned registry with CCleaner and nothing changed... I'm honestly giving up now, i've never had a problem like this, it might be just some simple compatibility problem with some windows setting that i did on the day the error first came up but i have no idea what it could be... and that's the problem if i would know where to look for i could propably fix this problem but i don't so there's no chance. Is there any way i could track the location of the problem? The only thing i can think of is that in order to get AOE II colors right i had to end explorer.exe after launching the game... could that have done some damage to halo then, a damage that is not fixed by uninstallation? That's the only thing i can think of... And as i've said before the game works in "safe" mode so something the safe mode disables makes the game work again... i'm not an expert at this though so i have no idea what it could be.
Posted by: Btcc22 I can try and help you over Teamviewer if you want.
Posted by: Barnacle_Blast I'm just trying to help here: Try uninstalling the game completely using the freeware version of Revo Uninstaller. But beforehand make sure to back up all your important files to an external hard drive or something.
Well i doubt it works because every halo game has the same problem so it's pretty unlikely that all of them got broken on that one day, especially when Halo trial is completely independent, has not connections to full version but i guess i can try it when i have some time, it's not like i have some other options... I'm not going to be re-installing windows just because Halo doesn't work though so that's out of question.
Posted by: I RaveN I Someone on a forum I visit recently had the same problem. Are you using a shortcut and adding any commands to the target? Ya i deleted the game completely (user folders and all), i didn't check registry though because i dont know how :( I tried disabling firewalls and i didn't change them since the day before the error happened anyway so they shouldn't be a problem. The problem is strange and i guess i will never be playing halo multiplayer again... i tried to google but i haven't found anyone else with similar problem. I still think it has something to do with the day when the error first came up because i was playing fine day before it... I pretty much only installed AOE II that day and AOE II is a Microsoft game and it also changed registry when it registered the cd-key so maybe it has something to do with AOE II messing up halo or something? But then why didn't reinstall help? Maybe my video card driver suddenly changed, although then why does the single player work and there's no graphical glitches etc. I'm completely clueless :S and i dont think any of the halo files are corrupted or broken or anything because it's the same in Halo trial, Halo CE and Halo 1.09... Oh and btw i can't create local or internet game either so that pretty much excludes all network problems, basically it crashes everytime it loads a multiplayer map but single player maps work fine and i don't think any of the multiplayer maps are corrupted or anything though because it happens with trial, ce and 1.09 and i've reinstalled all of those. You say its multiplayer only? Others would disagree but i'd disable your firewalls and try again.
-
Strange. I can only recommend that you ensure the entire folder has been deleted after uninstalling. I've seen a few instances of stray user-modded files being left behind, causing continued crashing even after reinstall.

Does single player work fine?
