I know it's late, and I'm killing time at work; this question has been bugging me: waterboarding consists of (in the crude way) putting a rag over someone's face and pouring water over it to simulate drowning without actually endangering the person...so...why wouldn't the person being "tortured" just hold their breath, and then pretend that it worked?

Get over yourself and stop bumping the thread, let it die.
It doesn't take a badass to properly waterboard someone, and it doesn't take a genius to realize that it's not as simple as "Holding your breath" There is no set time limit for waterboarding, it's however long it takes. Water hose + towel + your face = have fun holding your breath for ten minutes.
It's cute that you think you're being all authoritative and hardass right now when all of this has been discussed already. I'm not sure what you think you're accomplishing by posting.

OP, I bet I can make you tap out by water boarding you.
Posted by: Toxifies
Posted by:Each round of waterboarding lasts less than a minute; the point is to simulate suffocation, not cause it.
Yeah OP, because you've witnessed a real life waterboarding. Also, do you think that if it were so easy to counter, that it would be torture?
I'm just going off of what I've read. Most sources say 20-40 seconds of water pouring, followed by a short break to catch some breath, and then another round. And holy crap guys let it die, this was finished like a page and a half ago. What's all this business about cats and tattoos? To the guy below me, feel free to read the thread and not bump unnecessarily. [Edited on 08.18.2012 8:36 AM PDT]
Posted by: Sgt Commando
Posted by: theHurtfulTurkey I'm merely trying to get a more reasonable answer;

Posted by: SKYDROME It's designed to induce the feeling of drowning, and when you're drowning, you tend to reflexively open your mouth, in the hope of air, even when there is none. Because in stressful scenarios, especially with your face covered, it's natural to breathe as much as possible. It's all fine saying that you've had it done on yourself, but I don't believe that it would be anywhere near violent or unexpectedly sudden for your body to react the way it would do in a serious scenario. I'd imagine that in a real situation, it would be continued until you did break and started breathing in water.
Posted by: Munitions lll OP, the amount of dumb in here is astounding
It's not dumb to ask a question you don't know the answer to. It's very dumb to ridicule someone for not being afraid to admit they don't know something.

The entire point of waterboarding is that it simulates something we're naturally terrified of; drowning. The fact that water's being powered over you, coupled with the fact that you can't breathe, triggers this instinctive fear. Holding your breath doesn't change either of these two things, so won't affect the effectiveness.
-
Posted by: theHurtfulTurkey
Posted by: Maiq Perhaps because people get waterboarded for longer then the breath threshold?
If they did that, then they'd be in danger of actually hurting the person. The point of waterboarding is to terrorize a person without causing them to black out. While being waterboarded, you can't breathe anyways, so if they poured water on your face for as long as you could hold your breath, they'd be doing it incorrectly.
It to simulate drowning, and when a person is freaking out like that, then answers will stream from their mouth.
-
I'm guessing it's a type of reflex arc, like what happens to your hand when you touch a hot stove; it moves away from the danger without you cognitively knowing about it. In this instance the bodies first response is to gasp for air whether you want it to happen or not.
Posted by: jew man man
Posted by: theHurtfulTurkey I have tried waterboarding; I had a towel wrapped around my face with two people holding me down and another pouring water on my face; I held my breath and was only mildly exhausted each round.
