DO NOT Lower MTU

Any settings lower than 1500 increase the amount of packets your ps4 is sending into the PSN servers. Not only will this setting not affect your chances of getting online. But continue to flood the already bogged down PSN servers! Here for those of you who just ALT F4 and jump up in the air when told to do so... "A maximum transmission unit (MTU) is the largest size packet or frame, specified in octets (eight-bit bytes), that can be sent in a packet- or frame-based network such as the Internet. The Internet's Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) uses the MTU to determine the maximum size of each packet in any transmission."

  • TCP, IP, MTU and MSS magic numbers) 40 1500 The biggest-sized IP packet that can normally traverse the Internet without getting fragmented. Typical MTU for non-PPPoE, non-VPN connections. 1492 The maximum MTU recommended for Internet PPPoE implementations. 1472 The maximum ping data payload before fragmentation errors are received on non-PPPoE, non-VPN connections. 1460 TCP Data size (MSS) when MTU is 1500 and not using PPPoE. 1464 The maximum ping data payload before fragmentation errors are received when using a PPPoE-connected machine. 1452 TCP Data size (MSS) when MTU is 1492 and using PPPoE. 576 Typically recommended as the MTU for dial-up type applications, leaving 536 bytes of TCP data. 48 The sum of IP, TCP and PPPoE headers.

  • You're wasting your time. I've said this a few times but these people don't listen. They're too addicted and as a result are why PSN went down again. But they'll blame everyone else but themselves.

By lowering it by 27 it means that for every packet you send 27 bytes (87 bits) will be added onto the next packet if the packet you wan't to send is over 1500 bytes (12000 bits). However chances are that the multiple packets over 1500 bytes will be sent anyway and the additional 27 bytes will only add up to one more packet or may even fit into another packet which has less then 1473 bytes, or even add on to a runt frame making it so there is no additional data added. Overall the addition of the extra encapsulation is very small anyway so it doesn't really matter. Also are larger packets occupy slower links for more time causing our wonderful timeout message. At the moment PSN can't seem to handle over 1473 bytes without timing out so we set it to 1473. Trust me chances are this is not causing psn to crash especially since half the people with PSN don't know about this meaning that they are offline so the extremely small amount of additional traffic we create doesn't matter! Also OP I see that you have done a copy and paste from Wikipedia hinting towards the fact that you have only a basic understanding of networks. I imagine after reading that you read this.
"A larger MTU brings greater efficiency because each network packet carries more user data while protocol overheads, such as headers or underlying per-packet delays, remain fixed; the resulting higher efficiency means an improvement in bulk protocol throughput. A larger MTU also means processing of fewer packets for the same amount of data. In some systems, per-packet-processing can be a critical performance limitation. However, this gain is not without a downside. Large packets occupy a slow link for more time than a smaller packet, causing greater delays to subsequent packets, and increasing lag and minimum latency. For example, a 1500-byte packet, the largest allowed by Ethernet at the network layer (and hence over most of the Internet), ties up a 14.4k modem for about one second.
and immediately thought oh shit we are crashing the network! The greater efficiency would only be useful in places where those extra few seconds really count. IN our case they don't.
Yes I know my English skills are very poor despite it being my only language
• I challenge you all to log into your wireless router and look at your mtu settings. Once you have found it post it here. And then please post "everyone using Wi-Fi stop!!! You're taking down psn! "

If PSN can't handle the 27 bytes of difference then we've just been f*cked from the beginning.

            • At this point congestion isn't the problem, it's the filters put in place due to the attack.

              • To be honest, any setting change that would be largely detrimental to the servers would never be openly accessible to the public. Changing the MTU settings won't negatively backtrack all the way to the PSN servers. It will mainly affect your own ISP routers & modems.

                    •
Setting your MTU lower means your console sends out smaller pieces of data more frequently. By everyone doing this you are flooding PSN with traffic and contributing to a DDoS without even realizing it. PSN Status is, as of 11:41 AM EST, now offline yet again and probably because of this MTU nonsense.
