I hear the term ads in reference to the mobs of minions that appear while trying to beat a boss. Where did this term come from?
Thanks for the answers guys, I never really played mmo's before

I forget the origin of the term but it's used a lot in mmo games during raids/strikes/dungeons/instances in regards to the weak enemies that spawn during boss fights

Edited by FunkTheWorld: 1/2/2015 3:55:20 AMAdds, as in additional enemies. Been around for a while, I'm only 21 but back in the day when I played EverQuest with my dad (before WoW came out) this term was used so I assume it was around even before EQ. Pretty old term.

Adds are additions to main objective

Additionals, the mobs or minions that protect the boss or main objective

They're not. They are called 'Adds' or Minions, or mobs. they are referred to it as such because Bungie are one of the type of devs who believe the best bosses are those annoying bullet sponges that rely on calling more minions to help save its life.

I used to call them bad guys before I caught on with ads. At least "ads management" sounds better than "bad guy shooting"

Extra shit to shoot. Nuff said.

Since the first raids on Everquest " Adds " refers to the new spawn of minions during a boss fight or encounter. Usually they're there to keep you fighting non stop, you have to deal with them because they have the potential to wipe the raid. WoW did a good job with this on certain fights. A great example is Onyxia. While fighting her you have a swarm of hatchlings appear, not dealing with them ASAP makes the fight much harder ... if not impossible. It's another way for developers to up the difficulty in these areas and extend the boss fight itself. Especially if the boss is inactive during this phase.

Additional monsters is what they basically are. I call them trash mobs though
