The debate on what the final Darkness subclass will be has gone on since the introduction of the concept. But in order to understand what it will be, it must be determined what constitutes a Darkness subclass. By analyzing the big picture, it is evident that gravity is the most likely option because of its alignment with Darkness-related concepts, representation of physical forces, and its dissimilarity to Void. The gravity elemental subclass will be addressed as "Form" for the purposes of this explanation, but time will tell what its true name is. Background Solar is nuclear energy and thermal energy. It is the manifestation of entropy through increasing kinetic and nuclear energy. Stasis is the absence of thermal and kinetic energy. But it isn't ice, it is forced negentropy-induced crystals, perfect nuclear order. Arc is the manifestation of high-energy particles. Accelerated electrons and movement, strengthened nuclear forces. This energy creates entropy through the scattering and energizing of particles. Decay/Corruption is the most likely counterpart to Arc, as Decay is induced by atomic instability and weakened electrical bonds. The process of nuclear decay is a simplification of atoms, releasing radiation and altering the physical makeup of the substance. An expulsion of chaos to create internal order Thus we can deduce the following: Light is the creation of energy, complexity and chaos through the addition of energy. Darkness is the derivation of order through simplification and siphoning of energy. With this knowledge of the philosophies of Light and Dark, it is possible to make an informed prediction on what Void's darkness counterpart is. Exploring Void Void energy is the most ambiguous of the Light elements. There are many explanations throughout the lore, some of which contradict each other, but there is assurance that Void at least involves gravity, dark energy, and plasma. With the given information, the safest definition of Void is that of an "energy" subclass. It is the manifestation of entropy through the very presence of energy in a system. It is possible that the element is called "Void" not because it literally is a void, but because even in a void, this basic energy still exists in the form of dark energy and virtual particles, both of which are responsible for large-scale reverse gravity phenomena. This information is sufficient to prove what the next Darkness subclass will be. The Case for Form as a Subclass Form is the most likely element to be the third Darkness subclass for the following reasons: 1. It represents a fundamental force, gravity 2. It is a foil of a Light subclass. Void is energy, Form is matter. Void is reverse gravity, Form is gravity-gravity. 3. It conforms to Darkness ideologies. Form is the force of spatial order, the "[moving] of worlds" (Savathun, Altar of Reflection), and it acts through physically assimilating objects into the same position (i.e. a black hole) Alternate Propositions The above reasons support Form as the third darkness subclass, but it is also the most likely option because the other propositions do not make sense. SIVA: There are many reasons why SIVA does not make sense as the third darkness subclass such as the fact that it has no paracausal alignment, it doesn't directly mirror any Light subclasses, it doesn't represent a force, and doesn't make sense from a gameplay perspective. Nightmare: While Nightmares exist as a gameplay mechanic in Destiny 2, they do not fit the requirements listed above for a third subclass. A Nightmare subclass would also need to be some kind of necromancy abilities to make sense gameplay-wise, but Nightmares don't have enough potential for variety to split these abilities among the classes. Taken: This is the most likely of all of the alternate suggestions, but it doesn't hold its ground because it doesn't directly represent a fundamental force. It does, however, have a paracausal alignment, and the argument can be made that it is the counterpart to Void. But in the end, Taken abilities still implicate Form, as Taken abilities currently existing in-game have a heavy reliance on stomps, pushes, and other physical impulses reminiscent of a gravity-based element. Form may ultimately be an intersection of Taken powers and gravity-related ones, but Taken by itself isn't a compelling element. Conclusion Form (Gravity) is the most likely option for a third darkness subclass because it is the opposite of Void, it is the last fundamental force to be represented, it is consistent to Darkness ideologies, and most other options are unlikely. Congratulations for making it this far, reader. Let me know what you think about this theory and perhaps also alternate names for said element. Edit: I didn't properly clarify this, but this speculation is coming from a place of assuming the 2nd Darkness subclass will be Vapour (decay/soulfire/poison/corruption). And when I say gravity, of course I know Void already exists, but I'm talking about a more matter-oriented gravity subclass. As in physical objects that generate gravity, since Darkness subclasses lean more towards the physical side. Think of Devastator from Outriders as an example of what a Gravity Titan would look like.
