WAW-At the time of the golden age of WaW it was something kinda new and fun. The game mode developed more and more with each map. The zombies themselves were pretty cool which could be dodged if you could find a way maneuver around them. People might have found it too simple but I think this a mind Bo1 is when zombies was at its prime.
Bo1-Black ops 1 zombies continued on from WaW in terms of its simplicity and it gradually became more complex throughout its bo1 lifetime. All the maps with the exception of Shangrila were amazing. They introduced bigger Easter eggs with the release of each map. The reason I think bo1 zombies was the best imo was because it was simple yet complex at the same time. The maps were well made and they didn't get boring to play a lot. As for the zombies well they couldn't be dodged anymore like in WaW but it wasn't a problem and a player could very easily get used to it, aside from that zombies didn't have commando pro like they do in bo3 but I'll get to that later.
Bo2- Zombies the first few months was brutal. They had 4 different selections which was the town, bust stop, and a 3rd that a I ant remember, the 4th was the infamous transit. At first tranzit* was cool but it got boring fast and since I was a ps player, I had to wait an extra month for Alcatraz. The Alcatraz zombie map was hands down one of the best maps I've played from zombies so far. The Easter egg was fun to do, the blundergat was a cool wonder weapon, and the overall feel of the map was great for being a close quarters map. Each zombie map pack was a success, Buried was another wonderful map as well, origins wasn't the best but it was still a good map. The introduction of special traps/contraptions was really cool especially the trample steem. Overall zombies didn't start with a bang but it gradually got better each map pack mug like WaW and for that there's a special place in my heart for this game.
AW- Now I won't talk very much about this one but it had to be mentioned. AW zombies was unexpected and it might've angered a lot of zombie fans because they were "copying" zombies. Personally I didn't mind since I didn't enjoy survival very much in AW unlike in MW3 so I didn't mind another game. AW zombies was as expected, Exo suits and futuristic weapons. People were probably expecting something big like Treyarch knows how to do but in the end I saw this as something that needed to be done to hit the spot and that's indeed what it did.
Bo3-AT LAST WE'VE ARRIVED... To a letdown of a game mode. When Bo3 was announced I wasn't really going to join the hype train. Treyarch themselves said it was going to feel like bo2 (the multiplayer a least) so I'd didn't give in to the hype and all I really was looking forward to was the zombies since I was tired of the futuristic bullshit. When it came out I was hyped to play the first map, zombies was the first thing I played in bo3. Let me just say Shadows of Evil was disappointing, the map was so small and they had 3 -blam!-IN YEARS to make a map. Instead we got some alien bullshit that should have been left for CoD ghosts extinction. The Easter egg was cool but it was nothing too special besides the cutscene. The SoE 1930s theme was really cool I admit that but that's all the compliments I'll be giving this map. I thought to myself that the next map pack would definitely be way better. It wasn't by much, I liked how they went to ww2 but the map again was small. The map itself was a good improvement and the bow was freakin awesome. The cutscene for the Easter egg clarified a lot of things though so for that I say thank you. Fast forward now and we got that Japanese zombie map, I haven't played it extensively but it didn't get me looked right away like Ascension, Alcatraz, Der Riese, or hell even the first AW zombie map and it feels a tad bit boring. Zombies at this point is going downhill for me, close quarter maps, commando pro zombies, can't maneuver around zombies like in WaW, zombies make you flinch now (Kys who ever made that mechanic) and the feel of ZOMBIES is just not there anymore. Bo1 was an amazing example of what it should be, it was simple yet complex and you felt like you were playing zombies not like in bo3, bo2 had this feeling too and is another perfect examples of what zombies should be, sure the have subtle nudges to a more complex form of zombies but at its roots it still had a simplistic feel. Bo3 zombies probably was targeting the more hardcore players that loved to do Easter eggs but they need to tone down all these other extra tasks and make it feel like the game ode I've always loved back in the day.
Edit: some people are misinterpreted me when I said "Instead we got some alien bullshit that should have been left for CoD ghosts extinction." So to clarify what I meant, I mean to say that the Cthulu crap would've been better off in CoD Ghosts Extinction than in Shadows of Evil. I now way did I mean Extinction wasn't good because it was a very fun game mode to play with friends.

Bo2 zombies made it go downhill bo3 is okay but it don't beat bo1 or waw zombies
