So as most of you know, one of the many revolutionary artifacts coming to Rise of Iron has an interesting description.
The Memory Of Silimar has promised to mitigate the lethality and utility of damage over time effects that you're stricken by. However, DoT isn't really an issue anymore like it was in the past. Therefore, it can make you wonder: why would anyone use this over the other artifacts that seem noticeably better? That, my friends, is why I'm concerned right now.
There are certain reasons why I think that Bungie would add this artifact to the game. I'll list these potential motives, and whether or not I feel that these motives could make the crucible a better or worse place.
1. Thorn and/or Sunsingers are getting buffed back up to previous levels.
For the love of all things that are good, please don't let this be the reason. Why? If these two things were plaguing the crucible again, we'd be in a heap of trouble. All that this will do is make the artifact a must just to survive. The forums will be flooded with calls for nerfs, and the only response to these call outs will be bigots shouting, "just use the DoT artifact and you'll be fine, git gud you idiot." The problem with this is that if Thorn/Sunsinger becomes the clearly dominant meta again, nobody will have a choice in what artifact that they want to use. Want to use Memory of Jolder for no sprint cooldown? Too bad, you're going to get destroyed by thorn if you do. Hopefully though, Bungie has learned their lesson from DoT by now.
2. To keep current Thorn complainers off their back.
If this was the reason, I honestly wouldn't be surprised at this point. Ever since they announced that Thorn was coming to year three, many fellow year one players have started having war flashbacks. While I'm of the belief that Thorn is where it should be now, many disagree. This artifact may have been added simply to keep angry Thorn haters off Bungie's back. If so, then I honestly feel bad that they would have to spend time making an artifact just to keep some year one players at ease. While I still get PTSD in regards to year one Thorn, it's honestly not nearly as frustrating anymore. It's just a hand cannon with a little edge over legendary ones. Is it really that bad for an Exotic hand cannon to be a little better than say a Eyasluna?
3. New DoT related exotics are being added for Rise Of Iron.
Another promising option. Bungie could have easily dabbled with a new exotic weapon or armor, and made this artifact to make them feel almost useless in battle. Maybe they add a new weapon that has a short DoT, or an armor peice that makes DoT grenades/melee do more damage. While we simply don't know right now, I'd be...okay with this. If this the reason, Bungie needs to take the balancing of these new exotics extremely seriously to say the very least.
[Edit] 4. There could be new PvE enemies that cause DoT.
Not originally posted by myself, but still a very possible scenario. I could see there being an emphasis on DoT in the upcoming raid, as well as new Siva enemies with a burning attack. While Golgoroth comes to mind as well, I don't view it as that important since very few people will be running King's Fall once the expansion drops. I never really considered this option, but understand that I'm much more worried about the PvP implications of this artifact. With all due respect to PvE players, balance is much more delicate for the crucible than it is for anything PvE that isn't a raid.
For now, we will never truly know the motives of this new artifact until September rolls around. I ask all of you to test out the crucible as well as the strikes and raid with this artifact once it comes, and tell Bungie if it feels underwhelming to use, or if you feel forced to use it constantly. Be vocal, and don't hold back your opinions for anything.

lmao thorn and sunsinger being buffed? where did OP got this information from? Also, thorn was broken on y1. ever since y2, very few people use it. everyone is just being a little bitch because they want to bitch. jsut how everyone said they "loved and are glad" that mida was returning and how they use it so much where everyone was using hawkmoon, tlw, thorn, suros, vex or whatever meta weapon there was back then.
-
Bring back thorn y1 because f*** the people who keep calling for nerfs
-
I heard playing better will fix your DoT problem. And adding a counter into the game is far better than outright nerfing something.
-
I really hope it is 1. The April update really screwed up thorn and sunsingers were fine how they were. Everything should be brought back. The only reason they changed it in the first place was because 3v3 players were "frustrated".
-
Just got done reading the game informer article and it does look like there are SIVA pods in the plague lands that cause DOT, also sounds like some bosses can drop the pods as well
-
I hope they buff DoT to be even better in spite of you and everyone else that can't handle DoT in a game.
-
Bringing back the burn.... can you feel it? ;)
-
I'm fairly certain that the new enemies we'll be facing in PVE will have some form of DOT attacks. It would be silly to make artifacts that are only useful in PVP and only PVP.
-
How about you wait and see? We have enough Nerf posts for items that we haven't used.

Editado por Mr.Spartan126: 8/12/2016 3:40:14 PM#4: There might be new enemies that cause DoT. Edit: I say this because there has to be more reasons for a relic like this than just for PvP. If you look at all the other artifacts, except Memory of Timur and Memory of Perun, they all have PvP and PvE applications. This is just my theory, but I have strong feelings about it. Please add it to your list.

Editado por SquattingTurtle: 8/12/2016 8:27:27 PMTheres no way that bungie will make sunsingers have a better DOT. I doubt we will see class changes. What i suspect is that the new siva enemies will have DOTs and will persist in the raid as well.
-
It is possible that enemies will have attacks that will have DOT. Like you said tho, we won't know until the game is released.
-
Honestly they could buff Firebolts and Thorn but not bring them back to their old state..Thorn should be brought back to Pre-April Update status and Firebolts should be brought back to pre-June Update status (Viking Funeral would be kept the same so no more 12 second burn). If you think about it that wouldn't be so bad.
-
Or maybe some of the new mobs in PvE use DoT? Mind blowing I know but it is possible for something to exist and not need to be whined about by the crucible players.
-
So u want sunsingers to stay shitty? Yea -blam!- off
-
my thought is simply they're bringing back Thorn and with this they'll keep the complaining to a min. Cause the crucible is about to become Thornathon again. Either that or it will have raid implications
-
When were Sunsingers the meta? I don't remember that...
-
Or maybe it's not for a pvp reason at all as there is an entire second part of the game that isn't pvp.
-
Hmmm, I like your thinking. I'm going to go with #3
-
Number 3 sounds interesting.
-
How many other artifacts are out there? And the others are just as good or maybe better than this one, you know that right? The combos are relentless.
-
All they need to do is disable them in PvP
-
Here's the thing though, if everyone is using the artifact why would you use the dots. I feel like this is something we wouldn't know until the release of the DLC.
