Considering returning to Destiny after 5-ish years…

I remember playing the destiny beta nonstop when it first released in the summer. The following fall I was in 8th grade. Every day I carried around a Destiny magazine with concept art and articles about the upcoming video game (eventually it started falling apart). My best friend and I would marvel at the same images every day. When the game finally dropped, I mained a Hunter, with my best friend a Titan. Together we played destiny until the Taken King, with our streak ending when I became an upperclassman in highschool, right before rise of iron dropped. I remember my first VoG run, cheesing the Crota raid, getting my highest kill streak ever on the old moon map in crucible using preadyth’s revenge and going mad trying to collect all of the house of wolves exotics. I also remember running weekly raids and crucible with my old clan. Young and old and from super different backgrounds we had the best conversations. I opened this app on a whim for the first time in years and found myself wondering if it would be possible to recapture the experience I’ve had before with destiny. I’m a 21 year old college student now and can’t play as much as I used to, but I’d love to relive of some of my childhood. How much has changed since the taken king? Is it worth coming back? Does anyone have advice for finding a new community to game with? TLDR: Haven’t played since Destiny 1 Any advice on joining Destiny 2

Depends really. If you have lots of time, don't mind drip fed content and love running on a mouse wheel on the road to nowhere, I would stay away. Gameplay & Mechanics = Exceptional with no equal PVE = OK, you have a good grind ahead of you PVP = Is a trash fire on wheels Raids = MEH with next to no descent loot pools Strikes = Still boring AF Gambit = Don't know cause I don't play it. (Heard it's trash thou.) Story = 6/10 it's ok but just doesn't do it for me. O/A Content = 70% of the game has been removed and nearly nothing in return. Just a time killer and a hobby game now. Nothing more to me. The prestige and uniqueness of getting an exotic is long gone my friend.

  • You're better off having cool memories of playing D1, than playing D2 and being nothing but disappointed. The game is nothing more that a tedious circle of running the same tired playlists and grinding the same tired events over and over and over.... I have thousands of hours played across both games and am quite possibly just burnt out and bored with it all now, but unless you're coming back with a buddy or 2 to run around with having a laugh, I would suggest you find a different game to play 🙂

  • Well you definitely have lots of content to play through! A lot has changed and there's lots of new loot to get and try out, plus new subclasses and abilities. Plus, Vault of Glass is back in the game so you can relive some glory days and get some familiar guns with new perk options to try Overall now would be a decent time to jump back in!

If you have not played this game in a very long time since beta then you are in for a treat. The pve side of destiny has drastically changed for the better, its miles better in story telling than its ever been and raids are just as exiting as that vault of glass clear. New exotics to play with and a new darkness subclass called “stasis”. There is a new mode called gambit where its a mix of both pve and pvp, I hate the mode because heavy ammo is meta and dying by ghallorhorn sucks. I highly suggest you stay away from pvp, there is no fun in pvp but trials is back if you are into that. I highly recommend the pve side of destiny for the very best experience. Im mostly playing pvp in destiny but Im not gonna lie, the pve is where its at. Ps, DO NOT listen to these negative replies. Most of these guys are always mad on the forums anyway and will tell you its not worth coming into. They clearly speak from a pvp perspective, hence the reason I said to stay away from it.

  • I wouldn't recommend it, Bungie has totally given up on new or returning players , the builds you see youtubers recommending depend on mods you can only get from RNG at a vendor, and weapons and Exotics you can't get easily anymore , and they have removed most campaigns so you will be totally lost when it comes to the story The only positive thing is they will catch you up to 200 below hard cap, and you can get through that with blues , but you will still be way behind everyone else
Any advice on joining Destiny 2
If you’re thinking of really getting back into the game and spending money, I’d suggest finding someone who can show you the ropes. A fair amount has changed since D1. You’ll probably be able to grasp the basics since you played D1, but so much of this game isn’t properly tutorialized that unless you were there when it was changed then it can be difficult to understand certain mechanics, if for no other reason than the large amount of stuff that you need to keep track of. It doesn’t help that Bungie doesn’t update old content to match new standards. As an example, there are five raids in the game right now: Last Wish, Garden of Salvation, Deep Stone Crypt, Vault of Glass, and Vow of the Disciple. Because Bungie introduces new systems but doesn’t update old content with them, practically each raid has a different set of information you need to know about it. For example, all raids have challenges that rotate by encounter each week, but in order to do the Last Wish challenges you need to grab a bounty from Hawthorne. Deep Stone Crypt, Vault of Glass, and Vow of the Disciple have vendors at the end of the raid that let you target farm specific raid gear by spending spoils of conquest, a currency earned by playing raids. Last Wish and Garden of Salvation don’t have that. Vault of Glass and Vow of the Disciple have harder difficulty modes with adept weapon drops. Last Wish, Garden of Salvation, and Deep Stone Crypt do not. Only Vow of the Disciple weapons can be crafted. And that’s just one section of the game that suffers from this lack of updating over the years. There are plenty others. But at the end of the day the game is free to play now, so you could always hop back in and see if you can figure things out yourself without losing any money on it.

  • It’s a sub based game now. That resets your enjoyment gate with light level every 3 months. If your not farming pinnacles each week/month, your left behind. It’s fun, but only if you have the time for it. Sadly $100 bucks isn’t worth dealing with the developers narcissistic poisoning of the game through poor choices. I’m waiting for the 50% off sale. $40 I can justify playing in their noxious controlled environment game and yet still have some fun.

  • Unless you have a lot of time to kill and a lot of money to waste I wouldn't bother.

Run. Trying to understand d2 with all the content that's been removed is impossible.

      • Wow, so strange to think that Destiny is a nostalgic childhood game for some people. Doesn't even feel like it's been out that long. Time goes so much faster the older you get. Anyway everything has changed since taken king. I actually like D2 but most people who played D1 hate it.

      • Connections suck, busted seasonal weapons suck, Gambit sucks, PvP sucks, and PVE was never really good anyways. Easy pass if you play PvP. There are better PVE games out there for less money than Destiny will cost you too. I bought Witch Queen hoping for greener pastures. So far it’s worse not better. Campaign was ok the first time through. Became a chore after that.

      • I'd wait until D3 of that ever happens (maybe 2024?) D2 is in one of the worst states ever.

        • Destiny 2 is a lot more like D1 now than it was at launch. I'd recommend watching a Youtube vid that catches you up on the story of D2 thus far, but it's honestly still a great game. When I came back to D2, I relived some of my favorite moments from D1 but, in a way, better. I'd try out the free version to get a feel for it (which isn't too bad, honestly) and try to get a deal on WQ and the Legendary Edition DLCs if you end up liking it.

        • Honestly my guy if you don’t have much Time to play it is not remotely worth downloading because the decent content is essentially going to be time gated due to OTT power level restrictions.

I recommend downloading the game and giving it a try for a few days, maybe a week. If you are enjoying it, I say start investing into getting back into it. If not, feel free to move on. I will say that so far, the new player experience is said to be not great due to the lack of direction.
