There's been some discussion regarding this in Mythic Members. For the moment at least, it seems like the old trust-based system isn't coming back. While I won't reproduce the specifics of the discussion (not sure if everyone involved would be okay with that), it seems that Mythics will only be denoted by their membership in the private group, and future memberships will be left to the discretion of the administrators.
While that is all still up in the air at the moment, there's been no discussion about any form of title bars coming back.
What I propose is that instead of a trust-based title system, we (like many other features of b.next) adopt a system that reflects user preferences.
Voluntary Title System Proposal
Instead of awarding titles based on an automated system, titles will be chosen by the user from a list options.
Possible Options Include:
-Group Membership
-Destiny Faction Membership
-Destiny Ranks (or other content eventually)
In this system, if you were a member of a group, you could choose to have that group's name displayed next to your name, similar to how "Ninja" or "Bungie" is displayed now. This would have several benefits
-Members of groups based on the old title system could effectively get their title back
(this was the original basis for the idea, but the utility for other things is why I'm posting it here)
-Other groups could display their affiliation publically in a non-intrusive way
-New members (that are into Destiny but not yet the community) would still have a use for this feature via the display of rank.
This system would allow members to display what memberships and accomplishments they value most, instead of what some arbitrary trust system thinks of them. In addition, the public display of group membership may encourage some groups to promote good behavior, so as to avoid the group being associated with negative elements (yes, some groups will desire the opposite, but it's already like that now).
Anyways, that's my proposal for moving past the old system, and into the future of our community.

Years later and this is still a good idea. Yeah I'll bump anything I want.
-
So kind of like our own customizable title system?
-
You guys care way to much about meaningless titles on a forum site.
-
I was never anything more than a regular member, but I want the old system back.
-
Not bad, I like it.
-
I made me stance relatively clear in Mythix, but I'll kind of paraphrase here. I love the idea of certain members of the Community being recognize for longevity, commitment, and helpfulness. It's not a make or break subject for me though. I'll still visit the Community Forum and Mythix even if nothing is rewarded for our (mostly) pre-Halo 3 or pre-Halo 2 existence on this site. The members who have been here for 5+ years have shaped the way Bungie.net is today in more ways than one. As a result, I feel as if they should be recognized for that. But if nothing happens, then nothing happens. It's not that big of a deal.
-
I actually like that. No elitism to it.
-
I think you should be able to choose out of all the titles you've earned and use whatever one you want. Also a title based on the amount of followers you have would be kind of an ego thing but awesome.
-
There will be no recognition. We've all been reset to zero. DeeJ just doesn't have the heart to tell us.
-
Bungie said that Destiny will be all about player customization, so surely they will allow us to customize our Bungie characters. I'm thinking that the game will have some sort of ranking system, and that will play into our title system.
-
I just want something. I think ti would be a nice way to recognize older community members. Also I wouldn't be surprised if that is the thing mentioned in the wail sack going to to the people who were around over the dark ages.
-
Something I have come to miss about the title bar thing is that they broke the page up quite nicely, and made user recognition a lot easier. Even if it were simply a randomly assigned colour (shotgun pink!) Some sort of bar system would be quite nice.
-
I like how it used to be on bungie.net, hopefully it will be implemented again soon.
-
Not enough elitism
-
The group thing seems cool. Do we get "Igni Ferroque nerds", Silenttwelve?
-
"It would be abused" "It promotes elitism" "This only separates us as a community" "Blargh blargh blargh, etc etc etc" Did I miss any? The only reason I see this being an issue is that you'd have groups of friends that would create group titles against the CoC, for the sole purpose of having it as their title. In that case, it's easy to argue, "just mute them, they're probably not worth your time anyways!". Sure, but if I was a betting man, I'd say that the webteam has already cooked up a trust system algorithm that has been working for over a year. They did this with the past system, tracking our progress in 2006 and implementing titles in 2007, wouldn't be surprised if the same thing was going on all of 2012 in bungie.old. As for your idea, I like it. It's different and it promotes a sense of different aspects of the community. Just brainstorming here - what if the group you select is just displayed right underneath your avatar? That way, you can still have the automated system with new prefixes/titles, but you'd still be able to publicly represent a group of your choosing. If you didn't want to represent a group or didn't find your home yet, you can always not wear the hat for it. I'm curious to see what the webteam has been playing around with. Also, we have generations of Mythix now? Cool.

But I just became a Mythic!

Titles are so last month. Not sure how the new system will work, but I'm excited to see the outcome.

Added an example to the OP.
