THIS WILL BE A SERIES OF POSTS GOING INTO THE SUSPECTS, NOT THE MURDER TIMELINE LIKE USUAL. THIS IS DONE BECAUSE IT ISN'T CLEAR WHO THE ZODIAC ACTUALLY KILLED, HE WOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR MURDERS HE DIDN'T COMMIT, THIS IS ALSO GOING OFF THE ASSUMPTION THAT YOU KNOW A BIT ABOUT THE KILLER(S), LIKE THE NOTES
SUSPECT 1 Arthur Leigh Allen:
Arthur Allen born mid December 1933 was one of the earliest suspects for the zodiac killer, the evidence for him is completely circumstantial.
In 1966 police received two letters confessing to the murder of Cheri Jo Bates, these letters were determined to be typed from the same type writer, being a "royal model", these confessions were taken seriously and considered legitimate, I can not find any copies of these letters but presumably if the police was doing their work the letters would consist of information only the killer could know.
The day after the murder, Allen working as a school teacher after leaving the navy took a sick day with conflicting claims to why he needed the day off, this is believed by some to be because he had facial wounds resulting from Bates acting in self defense as she was being murdered. Even without the facial wound theory the FBI has claimed that it is common for serial killers to drink or smoke more and to take a sick day or two around the time of the murders.
A warrant was issued out and Allen's home was raided by the FBI, they seized a royal type writer, being the same brand that the confession letters were sent on. Allen also had a variety of guns but none of them were a match for the weapons used at previous zodiac killings. While it was unclear when this watch was obtained (some saying it was during the 70's) Allen owned a zodiac brand watch from his mother, with a similar symbol as the one in the thumbnail (the zodiac's symbol). Allen also had bloodied knives with dry blood, he would go on to claim that the knives were used for killing chickens. I can not find any sources saying if the blood was ever tested. Allen also had a similar build and shoes that matched prints near crime scenes.
Allen's family would claim that he would misspell certain words, something the zodiac killer did in his letters, they would also claim that he could write with both hands, this explaining why his handwriting didn't match the ones on the zodiac's notes.
Another thing to note is that Allen was sacked from his job because of an allegation that he molested students, however this could be from a co worker who was known to despise Allen, he would also claim that Allen confessed the zodiac murders to him.
At this point you would be wondering why he isn't in jail for the zodiac killings, here are some of the reasons why
-He died in the 90's due to heart complications
-Witnesses failed to pick him out of a lineup
-DNA evidence found at crime scenes could not be matched to him, I can't find what scenes the police got the dna from however
-No motive could be established, however with serial killers the motive isn't exactly clear, usually being sexual
-He had alibis for other killings.
Now in my opinion Allen did write the confession and committed the murder of Bates and maybe others, however I do not believe he was the zodiac killer, his watch with the zodiac killers symbol and 'zodiac' written on it, in my understanding was given to him in the late 60's to 70's as a 'joke' or tease from his mother.
However that is all my opinion and this is only part 1, there are a few more parts to come outlining different suspects.
