Angel and Logan continued to walk through the streets of the City, looking at the beautiful fountains and statues, and checking the various shops that were slowly waking up as the sun rose ever higher. "I've enjoyed this," Angel said as she looked up at Logan.
"Yeah, it has been nice. I'm glad you suggested this," Logan raised Angel's hand up and kissed it.
"Move it!" Yelled a man as he pushed Logan to the side and ran down the road.
"A simple 'excuse me' would suffice!" Logan yelled at the man running with a bag.
"You could've... at least... slowed him down!" Exclaimed a frantic man, wearing a ramen noodle shop shirt, that was out of breath.
"What?" Angel asked.
"That crook just stole all the money of my glimmer register!..." the store owner replied.
Logan looked down the road, then conjured a swirling disc of Void Light directly in front of the thief. Then the warlock opened another portal beside him, and close-lined the criminal as he stepped out. The man fell onto his back and shifted in pain. Logan took the bag of glimmer and handed it back to the shop owner. "Here you go," Logan said.
The man was awestruck by the display of power he witnessed. "You must be the City Guard,"
Angel created Void handcuffs for the thief and stood him up. "No, we're not City Guard." Then a thought came to her. "But, I bet they'd love to hear that 'the Protectors' did this..."
"The Protectors? You call yourselves 'the Protectors'?" The man replied as he condensed the many crystals into a massive cube of glimmer.
"Yup," Angel replied.
The sound of several feet approaching caught Logan's attention. "Well, it's time we go." With that, the couple disappeared through another one of Logan's portals.
Three City Guard titans arrived at the scene and looked around suspiciously after seeing the owner with his glimmer and the criminal cuffed. "I thought dispatch asked for Epsilon," one of the Guardians asked.
"They did," replied another titan. "Sir, what was the designation name of the team that assisted you?"
"They called themselves 'the Protectors'..." the thief said. He was already caught, so he had nothing to hide. The three Guardians looked at each other and sighed.
Angel and Logan walked into their warehouse and the portal closed. Nick was just waking up and rubbed his eye. "Well, you two are up pretty early..." he said with a yawn. Angel merely chuckled.
Logan created an orb of Light in his hand and summoned a large axion bolt. "Fetch my ghost, please," he said to the Void anomaly. Without hesitation, the thing bolted off down the hall of the armory.
"Did you just say 'please' to that thing?" Angel asked with a laugh. Logan just shrug his shoulders.
After about three minutes, the anomaly returned, carrying the sleeping Merlin on its condensed energy "head". It was like the magical entity was wearing the ghost like an adorable hat. Logan turned to Angel and smiled. "Hey Merlin, wake up!" The man declared.
With a sudden jolt, Merlin was fully awake. "Good morning, Silajir. Good morning, madam."
"Come on, we got work to do. I need my armor," Logan said. Merlin complied; after glowing a bright white, Logan donned his majestic, green trench coat and beaked helmet. His gauntlets flared to life as they channeled and amplified his Void power.
Soon, Alice flew into the room. "Ah, welcome back. Did you two enjoy your walk?" She asked while materializing Angel's bulky armor around her.
"It was lovely," Angel replied.
"And good morning to you as well, my lady," Merlin said turning to the glowing ghost.
Alice sighed, but was not going to say anything rude. "Thank you, Merlin." The blue ghost smiled to her as he willed his wizard hat on.
"Oi! So, what are you two 'bout to do?" Nick asked.
"I'm sure we could find some more trouble to handle if we looked for it. So, I assume we're gonna find some trouble," Logan replied.
"A'ight. What 'bout me? What should I do?"
Logan looked around, trying to think of a reply. "You have your command center over there. Lead us to the trouble... And keep a lookout for any reports of Daggr. I don't understand why he's been so quiet lately..."
"Aye! I'm on it," the old hunter walked over to his desk and quickly re-hacked into the Vanguard crime grid.
Angel flew over the City, scanning the streets below. Beside her, Logan was quickly jumping through opened portals--that were always slightly above his current location--so he could stay in the air. He called it 'sky jumping'. "Got anything?!" Logan yelled over the radio.
"I don't see anything!" Angel replied.
"Aye!" Nick shouted over the headset. "A hawk lost power in its engine! It's goin' down!" As Logan passed through the material world, he nodded to Angel and the two turned toward the coordinates sent to their helmets.
Angel found herself flying alongside a Guardian's jumpship that was en route as well; she saw two Vanguard marked Guardians in the cockpit. "Hello, boys!" She said over an open channel.
The pilot turned and stared with disbelief at the titaness flying beside his ship. "Tower Command, this is Hawkman... We're not alone up here..." While the pilot said this, his hunter copilot was trying to shoo Angel away by frantically waving his hands.
"What was that, Hawkman? Is it Fallen?" Replied a voice covered in static.
"Negative, Tower Command. It's a... winged... Guardian..."
There was a long pause after that. "She is not a threat, Hawkman. I repeat: not a threat," the voice said finally.
"Copy that... Hawkman out..."
"Don't worry, I got your back!" Angel said over the open transmission before zooming ahead of the ship. Logan waved at the Guardians as he appeared between portals. The Awoken hunter removed his helmet and rubbed his grey eyes.
Sure enough, a hawk in the distance was struggling to stay aloft. Logan generated Void Light around his feet, creating a plate for him to stand on despite being in the sky. He, then channeled Light through his hands and tried to hold up the ship with his reality shattering force. "Angel, I can't hold it forever!" Logan yelled over the radio, already feeling the strain.
Angel flew into the now open cargo bay and folded her massive wings so she could fit. There were several scared passengers; frightened by both the no longer functioning ship, and the titaness that just flew in. "Alice, set the calculations. I'm gonna have to carry two at a time..."
"Done!" Alice replied almost instantaneously.
"Okay! Everyone is getting off this ship!" Angel yelled to the passengers. "But women and children first!" Reluctantly, women with children walked over to the Guardian. Angel held onto them tightly, then flew down to the ground.
She did this about three times over the course of thirteen minutes. By this time, Logan had channeled so much Void Light that his body was beginning to shut down. Eventually, he lost control and the ship lurched as its single engine was burdened once again. The remaining passengers were tossed to one side of the cabin, some hitting their heads. Angel watched as Logan's body fell to the streets below. Quickly thinking, she cast a small Ward of Dawn around him just before he hit the ground.
Angel flew back to the ship, then used her wings and own strength to hold up the ship; or to slow its descent, at least. She was struggling as her jetpack was starting to fail. "Go!" Yelled a voice over her radio. "We have the ship suspended!" Angel flew above the hawk to see the Guardians from earlier tethering the airbus to their jumpship. A smile came over the titaness.
She flew back in and gathered the remaining passengers; this time carrying as many as her jetpack would allow (which was the remaining five). Angel extended her wings to catch a draft and slow her fall to the ground. She reactivated her jetpack, which had used up what little supply of Light left, just in time to give everyone a safe landing.
