There are currently 23 nations that are without a military, and OH HEY LOOK, they're doing JUST FINE. They may allow for the Airspace protection by larger countries, but that just goes to show how much we should just make it illegal for a country to have a military.
Instead of a military, there should be the installation of small, defense-only militias or para-militaries, both of which are only active when needed.
-
Um who would enforce no militaries?
-
Yes no.
-
All we need is liberty prime!
-
The only reason we have a army here is because they have a army over there.

Dude. Watch the World Wars Mini-Series that recently aired on the History Channel. War is a complex and difficult beast to predict and control. The second world war was a result of the missteps of the victors of the first world war. A nation that was supposed to have been impotent was able to invade most of Europe. Two former allies became aggressors. Just think on that for a while.
-
lolno. I like my job.
-
Fun fact that a lot of people know but some people don't: The Department of Defense used to be called The Department of War.
-
It's a nice idea, but the simple fact is that people are bastards. Nationalist pride isn't going away anytime soon, Militias would grow in size until they can take over the next country and so on and so forth. The other issue is, who would prevent other countries from growing too powerful or stepping on the path to conquest/invasion? You'd need something more powerful than them, to keep things in order. Things aren't that bad on the world stage at the moment though, sure the Middle east is an utter cluster-blam!- and there are one or two other countries at war with each other, but there aren't any major world powers kicking seven shades of shit out of each other anymore. MAD is what's kept the peace for the last 70 years, even if countries like the USA and NATO/UN are doing their interventions in the middle east and Russia is basically trying to rebuild the USSR. There is always going to be war, strife and conflict. The closest we will get to world peace is what we have now, when the middle east settles down that is <.<
-
Yes. Do this. And the we will invade you and steal your pop tarts and fatty American goods.
-
If I decide I want a military, but you make it illegal, how are you going to stop me?
-
A very well thought out idea, but how would this be enforced without military action?
-
Nah, I think I'm gonna stick with all of human history on this one and keep the military.
-
Yes! Let's not have militaries! Just so the country next/above/below us can arm up and take us over!
-
Lol, hippies. DIE HIPPIE! DIE!

That's because those 23 countries have nothing worth invading over, idiot.
-
Yes, because every single county in the world is exactly the same, with the same interests, and the same issues. Oh wait...
-
Modifié par Banfiltrat0rN7 : 6/24/2014 2:47:52 PM-blam!- that, that's one way to get curb stomped by a neighboring country who wants your resources. So point in point, offense is the best defense. Not the other way around.
-
Source? I'm betting most are island nations and most have a defense pact with a major power that has a military. - Der
-
Russia JUST annexed Ukraine in March. What about ISIS? Do you think they'll just stop because we ask them to? What about NATO? What about China, NK, or Iran? Those are all enemies. They're literally just going to wait for us to dismantle our militaries and then invade.
-
And you're either a troll or a communist.
-
It's a well known philosophy of Thomas Jefferson himself that a standing army in times of peace is unnecessary.
-
If we didn't spend so much on the military we'd be on the Moon right now.
-
Nope. We haven't evolved past the point of war as a species yet.

but but....how will 'Merica spread freedom?
