Here's a summary if you just wanna read what I confirmed through testing. You can ignore the video, but I do my best to keep the videos short.
Also, ya :3 we all know hipfire (general hipfire, not talking about the perk) is bad. Just wanted to point out that it's actually much worse than some ppl think. This is weird coming from Bungie, since Halo used to be all about hipfire. Bungie, if you see this, please buff hipfire <3
First off, ALL WEAPONS lose range when hipfiring, not just shotguns.
Stability and Accuracy aren't your only problems when hipfiring. Range is lost when hipfiring, but indirectly. What?
Aiming rewards a Zoom Multiplier to your Range Stat (which I explain in my previous video), which means you're losing your Range Multiplier when hipfiring. Example: Scout rifles have a 1.7x Multiplier from zoom and shotguns have a 1.2x.
In a nutshell, Aiming Down Sights (ADS) results in less damage penalties over range, even with shotguns. As if we already didn't enjoy hipfire, this cements its place as a liability, in most cases. Obviously if you're in point-blank range, it doesn't matter.
Zoom Multipliers - Scopes add to this zoom, as well as the Custom Optics Perk (which is pretty useful actually)
Shotgun - 1.2x
Auto Rifle, Fusion Rifle, Machine Gun - 1.5x
Hand Cannon, Pulse Rifle - 1.7x
Scout Rifle, Rocket Launcher - 2.0x
Sniper Rifle - 4x
A Fusion Rifle's Range determines the Speed the Fusion Bolts will travel. The Range Multiplier granted from Zoom does not affect this, surprisingly. Fusion rifles, in my opinion, are the best weapons to hipfire right now (in general), despite how much they under-perform in the current Meta. No, I'm not saying Hipfire Fusions are amazing, just that - if you really wanna hipfire, go with Fusion Rifles.
Question: If you see the video, can you leave an opinion on the animation at 1:10 in the video. I just started learning how to animate, and that ONE little 1.5 second animation took me 5 hours to make lol I really wanna get better at this :) just recently upgraded my editing software. Hope you enjoy <3
The Taken King, brought many changes to Range, Aim Assist / Target Acquisition, and Accuracy to help balance weapons (Hand Cannons and Auto Rifles).
Bungie Employee, Jon Weisnewski, confirmed in an interview how these Mechanics truly perform in The Taken King Expansion. All this information can be found in this episode of the Crucible Radio Podcast. Basically, your Range stat contains Damage Drop-off, Accuracy, and Aim Assist. Zoom only seems to affect the Damage Scaling, not Accuracy Aim Assist. My reasoning: The Increased Range on Fusion increase the Travel Speed of the burst. Zoom didn't affect this at all. This means that Zoom strictly affects damage scaling.
So ya, you can be like, "duh, hipfire sucks" but it's a bit more complicated than that :) Hope you learned something!
