Google has never hidden (and its competitors have often criticized) the fact that it combs through your email in order to target you for advertisements and collect information about you. Honestly, Google has a point -- nobody should reasonably expect privacy if they use Gmail. Google itself has made that clear for years.

Heard about this on Fox. Google is way too invasive nowadays. A red flag should have gone off when they asked everyone on YouTube to use their real name.

9 RisposteWhy is everyone so pissed? Its not like there is a person reading those emails. They use text recognition software to flag statistically significant terms to build a profile. No human every really lays eyes on the emails. Besides, its a company offering a free service. If you want privacy in your communications, use your own email servers, or send a letter snail mail via the post office.

OK. So encrypt your emails if you want privacy. Would you be upset if someone read a postcard you sent through the postal system? If you want privacy, use an envelope.

Something that's unclear to me: is this saying that I (as a gmail user) should not expect privacy with my emails, or what, by virtue of ghaving a gmail account, I can't expect privacy on the internet in general? Also, why are people surprised by this?
