Story Telling & Story-Selling, whats the difference?
What is the big difference??
To give you my opinion on this you must first know where I am coming from.
I wrote my own novel
In my book I decided to make three characters, the plot line is not dissimilar to many other "hero finds his powers" type books, but I'd like to think it is original.
There were times when I was writing that I felt discouraged, I thought ,"Oh man, this part is so descriptive and not enough action is happening!", but I learned to pace myself
There were instances in the book when a character would be followed by an unknown entity and then attacked, there were times when the characters engaged first in conflict, and then there were times that I took four chapters of nothing happening and then all of a sudden...
BOOM!! DRAMATIC ENTRANCE!! BADASS MAGIC CASTING AND SWORDFIGHTING!
THE WHOLE SHIBANG
But that is what made the book so good, it was like finishing food that left sauce on your fingers and you eagerly licked the sauce off wanting more food to appear
Sure I could make the whole boom about fights and describe them in great detail, but thats all they would be, is fights and battles with no legends behind them.
Story telling is so much more, its like a a giant boulder that sits on a beach, getting carved away by the elements of weather everyday, first comes the ocean waves, then the salt decay, next comes the rain and air, and the suns burning hot stare. After many years the boulder turns to trillions of sand grains, each holding its own story
That is much better a story. Story-selling is no better than getting a boulder; shoving it in a compacter and waiting five minutes for it to turn to sand.
When a protagonist overcomes impossible odds, becomes the hero that they had struggled to be, when they barely survive, with their blood running hot, lead in their limbs, crimson dripping from their blade, victory in their eyes but sorrow in the heart...that is story telling.

I know this post seems random, but It occurred to me in a midnight stupor and I thought everyone should see what I thought
