Not knowing exactly how extensive the radar or map system will be, has caused me to ask this question. Just how advanced will the two (or one) be? I'd like to have a radar or warning system of some sort so I don't get impaled in the back when exploring. I'd also like an advanced map to set my own objective markers, navigate where I am in the wild, and see any markers my friends/teammates set. I'd also like to see distress beacons that indicate where someone needs help. This is assuming I get to play with lots of people which I hope to do (no, not an MMOFPS, just a really populated coop game w/ most of my friends)

Sound should be your warning system. As for radar/map, I don't want it to dictate where I go. I want my visuals and curiosity to do that. "Oh, looks, there is an old ruined tower, lets go check that out!" Rather than, "The map says this is a dungeon" or "My radar says there is treasure and enemies here". I want to be intrigued into exploring, not explore for the sake of playing the game. For instance, Skyrim did this... they had markers for dungeons and stuff you could explore, I want it to be much more natural than that.

Distress beacons in campaign/co-op on planets is very unlikely because other people only appear in your game when you are passing through "social areas"/I can't remember the name Bungie gave the areas. The rest of your ideas are good. The ability to place waypoints for yourself and your friends would be nice.

It's should at least be able to encompass the area that you are in so you don't lose your teammates or you know where you have been. I do like the idea of friends setting markers for you. There should be a radar (map) and also a warning system that keeps track of all distress signals in your area, markers and more.
