Developer Open House Question

First off, a personal question. Will Lord Saladin carry the Iron Banner Helmet during March's Banner event? (It's the only piece I'm missing and I do so love the style and perks) The biggest question I have for Crucible's developers is not from only myself, but my friends, and probably many more besides. Why is there such a massive emphasis on the Crucible? Is it meant to be the primary game mode? Several Exotic Bounties require success in the Crucible, almost all "special events" are primarily Crucible-centric, and the only way to purchase Faction gear is to spend Crucible Marks (this only became an issue after the deletion of the the Materials Exchange. In doing so, the only way PvE-only players could obtain said currency without entering the Crucible was removed, but it was never explained why the Exchange was felt detrimental to gameplay to merit the deletion). How was the Materials for Marks exchange at the Quartermasters in any way injuring the game? Was it removed to guide more players into the Crucible? It feels as though the Crucible receives preferential treatment, and that the PvE experience suffers as an expense. All of the weapon tuning (which only seems to lead to bugs and issues in PvE), the lack of attention to issues solely within PvE (i.e. the buggy Raids, such as Praetorians instantly healing just as they should die), whereas any issue affecting the Crucible always appears to be given the utmost priority. It just doesn't make any sense. We can spend untold hours blowing off each others heads, but we cannot find the time to be told our history, or why we are killing these other sentient beings. Other than an unsatisfying, "They are our enemies.". Doesn't that make us all sociopaths? One examples is Ghost not telling us the full story after we were resurrected, even after we were safely ensconced in the Tower. Also, the Speaker stating, "I could tell you of the great battle...," but failed to elaborate any time afterward. For Heaven's sake, if you stand beside him in the Tower, he will eventually say something about there not being time, and that we must return to the fight. Yet, we still find plenty of time for violent competition? Sorry for all of the questions, after 800 odd hours I've built up quite a reserve of them. One final note. Thank you for your time, patience, and for having Claudia Black voice a member of the Tower. There must be at least one Farscape fan on staff. (You cannot deny the resemblance the Awoken bear to Chiana and the rest of the Nebari)

  • You raise the same questions going in my mind. Crucible is, for me, like a mini game inside the main game. The main game is a pve centered game with a mini game where instead of fighting npc you fight another player for lols. Or at least, that's how it seems. But this raises the question: if pvp is a secondary and minority game mode (even in how it's put in the menu), why are the weapon performances in pvp so important but weapon performances and player feedback about pve so secondary? They seem like it. I don't understand. The marks situation is the weirder one for me. You can level your rep in a faction using vanguard exp but you can't use vanguard marks to buy gear in factions? Why? I don't understand the game economy behind this at all. I also don't get why nerfing is always done to hit the weapons players enjoy the most. Adjustments should be done to better the weapons players don't enjoy as much instead. I mean, making people mad isn't the best strategy to sell games. In this case, buffing shotguns for pve is a yes. Buffing pulses (perhaps even more than they were) is a yes. Nerfing autos, shotguns (as the range part is a nerf), hand cannons and fusion rifles is a no. There was no real need. Additionally, special trophy weapons such as the vex should be treated individually so as to not fade into nothing as they will. If you exclude the red death, suros, icebreaker or gjallahorn, all exotics are one way or another "meh". I'd prefer it they would be harder to get but more special. Overal I would like them to explain why they have not been willing or capable to. :/

    • Great idea the one thing would say about crucible that they do need to sort out is the rewards!

    • I'd like to hear about reconciliation between PvP thinking + PvE expectations. The schism 'tween these two models grows ever-wider. I don't understand how this game can be anything but a walled garden - from itself - as long as these two modes cannot co-exist. This would be required for the wide-open free-range world we expect. No more: Killed By The Architects, should be a design criteria going forward.

    • Better question is, why is the Crucible an utter mess. From the creators of Halo it is one of the most unbalanced, most unrewarding and casual-laden experiences ever made. Every time I play it it leaves a sour taste and makes me detest Bungie's design choices.

    • But why screw up PvE when they change PvP. Can't they just change the values of the weapons in PvE like they do armor ratings? I for one don't like getting shot through walls due to lag so don't play PvP and stick with PvE. Just leave our stuff alone.

    • The reason there is so much emphasis on Crucible is because it is the the only aspect that is constantly changing, for better or worse. It is what everyone relies on when everything else is completed.
