Today I've twice seen players doing something strange in the queue to join an Iron Banner match and it has me wondering if it is a form of cheating the system to end on a side with better players.
Bored in the queue I was going through and inspecting some of the other players to see what new weapons people have and I first noticed a player who was wearing the SRL suit waiting for a match. I thought that was weird and when the game started the player switched back into normal armour. Unfortunately I didn't pay attention to what light level the SRL suit was and I didn't think much more of it until later I saw another player in a queue wearing the original suit of armour you start the game in (not a new player as they had 400 light weapons). This time I payed attention to what it did to their light level and this put their light level down in the 170's. The player ended up on the other side and again changed into normal armour, obviously as the match started, and the side I was on got wiped in that match.
Now I'm wondering if by a player putting on armour in the queue that is light level 3 or 5, thus artificially reducing their light level, means that the match making system tries to balance the sides and puts them in a side with higher ranked players to balance the sides out. Then when they change armour and go back up to 400 light their side is in reality far stronger than the other side and thus more likely to win etc. I don't fully understand Destiny's matchmaking system but is seems logical that it would try to use player ranking and light levels (in matches like Iron Banner where light levels matter) to try and balance the two sides.
Is this a new form of cheating the system to get better win/loss ratios etc? Is it something that has been happening since the start of Destiny? Am I completely wrong about this suspicion and these players where just being weird? I'm interested to hear if people know if this is a thing.

Not really cheating but more of an exploit. Besides it's competitive nature to want to have the best team mates around. If this works they just made sure they got better teams. Which probably works pretty half assed since most people que with atleast 3 man teams or more.

well, I hadn't noticed that but, I am going to give it a shot later.. I still have some light level 5 gear.. would be very sad if bungie coded the matchmaking this way.. not entirely out of the question though. If it seems to work, I will report back
