Why are so many people on this forum in denial over the success of Destiny?

I see threads on here day in day out about how Destiny is a complete flop and that Bungie are gonna have to dump this series and move on to something else because it is so unpopular. Yet when you look objectively at the criteria for a successful game, Destiny is one of the most successful new ips in recent memory, in February it already had 16 million registered users. In comparison, Watch Dogs (another successful new ip), which had similar hype to Destiny, had only sold 10 million by the end of 2014. In case you need any more proof of Destiny's success, log on to your XB1 (if you're one of the few who has one) and look at the 'top games right now'. It is guaranteed that Destiny will be in the top 5, it's usually top 3 and ahead of Advanced Warfare. MS's flagship franchise Halo rarely even appears in the top 10. To summarise, the rabid Destiny haters on this forum need to give themselves a reality check and stop making themselves look stupid. Your personal opinion on the quality of the game has no bearing on its overall success.

  • In terms of hype and promises made, this game is a flop. But in terms of sales then this game is successful.

  • Because it's one of the best games out there right now, and it's typical for the best games to receive the most criticism. People don't whine this much about other games because people don't care enough to whine. Destiny is under a microscope, so all its flaws get magnified. That being said, it's also partially just good ol' fashioned bandwagoning. People see others complaining, see the attention these complainers get, and want to replicate it in an attempt to be cool. Further, it's just the nature of these forums. Typically, people are going to be more passionate and more likely to speak up on an issue that they feel negatively about. If you're happy with the game, you're going to spend your free time playing the game. If something about the game upsets you, you want to go complain about it. That's where these forums come in.

I think they lost 175 million on launch. From memory they made 500 million dollars worth of game discs. When the bad reviews came out they sold 325 million dollars worth of that 500 million stock. Somewhere out there is a 175 millions dollars worth of destiny games unsold.

      • No ones in denial, this game just makes you grind unreasonably long amounts of time to get one piece of gear, which is why so many hours have been played

        • It's incredibly financially successful, and has done well with its marketing program. It's also an easy game to pick up and play, but it gets old a tad quickly which is unfortunate because it has very good mechanics. For me, I personally don't like the weekly caps they do, but to each their own. And although is has been financially successfully does not equate to everyone being happy with the content they were given and the way future content is being doled out by Activision and bungie

Watch Dogs is actually a full game. Destiny is 50% of a game. Destiny didn't even come close to being to what they said it would. I hope they do abandon it because they lack the intelligence to make it what it was intended to be. If they had the smarts, we would have some kind of story, lag wouldn't affect every raid and Crucible match and cheaters wouldn't be running rampant. I preordered over a year in advance... I know what this game was meant to be as I actually researched it before buying it. Destiny could have been the best game ever if another studio had been behind it. Bungie's group split when they partnered with Activision... the smart ones apparently left and the janitors finished the game. Keep drinking the Kool Aid fanboy.

            • I actually really like Destiny. But here's why; Destiny was made to attract the FPS genre's players. It did. However, it also attracted the RPG genre's players. This caused two groups to play the game with vastly different expectations. Destiny has four subforums to itself. People who love Destiny usually stick there. The people who Destiny died for came here, to the Gaming subforum. Most people access these forums through the Destiny Companion app. They get hooked on the forums, but then Destiny dies for them, and they stay on the forums, but they come to Gaming, and Offtopic, because the Destiny subforums are of no interest to them.

              • This only means that to many of us drank the kool-aid and got burned. Terms of sales, yes destiny was a success; that doesn't mean the game was good. Gamers will hate on destiny cause Bungie is greedy and didn't deliver what was originally promised when Destiny was first announced

                  • Destiny is riding on the success of their PR department and what was promised. Players quickly realized it fell short.
