Aifos ranting about the Seatruck

Good evening everybody! This is Aifos coming to you alive from THE OCEAN! So, a while back, I played through the first Subnautica game, and it was a ton of fun. I think most Subnautica players are weird, because they say that the game is "extremely difficult", and "absolutely terrifying" even though is pitifully easy, and incredibly chill, but it is still fun. However, when I went to play Below Zero, I wound up dying more times than I ever did in the first Subnautica game--which is to say, once--and since I play on Hardcore I lost my save, which would have been fine, but I didn't want to sit through that obnoxiously long intro again. But, either there was an update, or I was just misinformed, because I decided to finally try getting into Below Zero again, and it turns out you can skip the intro! Brilliant. So, now I've been playing Below Zero, and I've been having a blast. It's still just as pitifully easy, and still just as totally chill, and I'm down for it. Only, the game has one major flaw: I hate the Seatruck. So for those of you who are unaware, Subnautica and Below Zero are both games about exploring alien oceans. At first you do this by swimming, but you steadily get upgrades as the game goes on. In both games you start out by getting a Seaglide, a little handheld propulsion thing that lets you swim faster, before eventually obtaining vehicles. In the first Subnautica, the three vehicles are the Seamoth; a small and nimble one person submarine, the Cyclops, a much, much bigger submarine that's a bit harder to maneuver but is much more durable and can carry the other vehicles in side it, and the Prawn Suit, which is an actual mech suit. In Below Zero, the Seamoth and Cyclops are replaced by a new vehicle known as the Seatruck. The gimmick of the Seatruck is you can attach modules to its back end, and each module slows the Seatruck down, but has useful functions, like a fabricator, extra storage, or being able to lug the Prawn Suit around. And if the Seatruck existed alongside the Cyclops and Seamoth, this would be great, actually. It's faster and more nimble than the Cyclops, but bulkier and with more space & utility than the Seamoth, so it would be great for medium length expeditions, leaving the Seamoth as your go to for shorter expeditions, and the Cyclops for longer ones. But the problem is it doesn't exist alongside the Seamoth and Cyclops, it replaces both of them. And this sucks, because it doesn't effectively replace either of their functions. Now, a Seatruck with no modules handles exactly like the Seamoth, so you would think it would replace the Seamoth just fine, and early game it certainly does. The problem is, having to deal with modules adds a lot of tedium to the process. In the first Subnautica, if you want to take the Seamoth somewhere, you just hop in the Seamoth and go. With the Seatruck you have to first board the Seatruck, then detach the modules, then get back in the Seatruck, and then take off, then when you get back you also need to reattach the modules before you dock. Taking the Prawn Suit anywhere is just as obnoxious. With the Cyclops, all you had to do was put the Seamoth in the Cyclops dock, take the Cyclops where you needed to go, then deploy. With the Seatruck, you need to board the Seatruck, leave the Seatruck, board the Prawn Suit, mount the Prawn Suit, then get back in the Seatruck, and once again once you get back, there's an extra step of tedium where you need to dislodge the Prawn Suit before docking the Seatruck, then get back in the Seatruck, dock it, then get out go and get in the Prawn Suit, then dock that too. The Cyclops wasn't without tedium, mind you, it couldn't be docked at all, so its power cells needed to be swapped out every time you used it, but you could easily nab the power cells on your way out, then hop in the Prawn Suit to doc, and slipping in and depositing the power cells was fairly quick and simple. On top of all of that, though, it really throws off the progression of the game. In the first Subnautica, getting any vehicle is such a huge deal. When you first got the Seamoth, suddenly the entire ocean felt like it opened up to you. This thing was so fast, you could go anywhere! When you get the Cyclops, long expeditions become possible, as you can pack it full of extra resources, not to mention its huge power reserve. When you first get the Prawn Suit you get to ride around in a freaking mech suit! Oh, and I guess the depths became more readily explorable as well, but more importantly MECH SUIT! While first getting a Seatruck still has that feeling of the entire ocean being open, and while the Prawn Suit is still a mech suit, the in between is now you're making all these modules that just lack the same impact. Like, theoretically, getting the Fabrication Module and Storage Module has the same effect of making longer expeditions possible, but, well, there's a little bit of a different feel when making a giant fortress of a submarine compared to a couple little boxes. Beyond the fact that the boxes are a lot less visually impressive, the fact that you make so many also lessens the impact. Nothing in Below Zero has felt quite as amazing as building the Cyclops for the first time. Oh, and also, the Seatruck doesn't look as cool as either of the vehicles it replaces. But okay, that's all. Rant over. I just want my Cyclops back. Tl;dr? Here's my point! *you hear Aifos sobbing uncontrollably in the other room, muttering things about how he wants his Cyclops and Seamoth back, and how he'll never forgive the Seatruck for taking them away*
