Been watching a lot of very detailed and compelling analyses (uh-NAL-uh-sees, not AN-uh-LIE-ziz) of stuff lately, from cinema to gaming and most visual art... This is a pretty good look at the downfall of arguably the biggest franchise of the seventh generation.
That said, I can't offer too much myself: I remember little of 3 and WaW, and Modern Warfare struck me as a needless deviation from the gravity of history, loaded with the plot of a generic Tom Clancy (spelling?) novel.

Oversaturation is what happened to Call of Duty.
-
"Call of duty 2 wasn't about a power fantasy" *proceeds to gun down hundreds of enemies*
-
Supply drops of whatever the -blam!- they're called. Design philosophies going out the door. Watered down gameplay and weapons. Generic level deisgn. Mediocre storytelling. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
$
Microtransactions, close to pay to win, also the time to kill getting faster and faster.

Gamers: We don't want the same recycled game year after year. Activision: Gamers we have COD that's not the same thing year after year Gamer: What's this trash I want COD Modern Warfare
-
I'll tell you what happened. ...Activision fired Vince Zampella.....that was the beginning of the end
-
It wanted to, I guess you could say, evolve and change things up. As a guy who has bought every title since 07 I can tell you that the newer titles aren't too bad. Except AW, it's just horrid.
AN-uh-LIE-ziz
If you pronounce it like this, you should be hanged. As soon as Call of Duty discovered the true financial potential of multiplayer with CoD4, all was lost. The classic, historically focused chronicles and on-disc art galleries were traded for drama and espionage and even that ridiculous highly-scripted action tripe was shortened for the sake of the gun-shrine PvP. And honestly, undead Nаzi survival with super powered sodas and laser guns? Who the fuсk thought that was a good idea? I think it's preposterous that the same people who "only buy cod fer zombies" are the ones who "really want boots on the ground not this jetpack stuff" I really hate wasting my breath complaining about CoD and CoD fans, there probably isn't anything more pointless to argue about. Is there hope for the franchise? No, of course not, lol. Turn the page and play something worthwhile.

What happened was they knew that people wanted change & they saw how people loved Titanfall so thought that meant that they should take CoD into the future (like Titanfall) and into space with gameplay similar to Titanfalls.

FUTURE!

A horde of skill-less teenagers happened

The engine is soo behind in COD, I felt like I was playing soldier of fortune again.
-
It evolved
-
They made so many cod games that people got tired of it and their engine is soo old
