This guy isn't wearing a helmet. Now it's just concept art, but still, it seems there was at least the concept of removing one's helmet thrown around at one time. The mask he's wearing could be considered a type of "helmet" but to me, the development reason for using non-removable helmets would be so you don't have to render faces. But since in this case they'd have to render a face anyway, it might easily be an option.
