Lets face it. Level 40 doesnt mean much at this stage in the game. Destiny is a numbers-driven game, and no number is more important for Guardians than their light level. Running around with a 40 beside your name doesnt tell anyone much about the guardian and their avatar and how far ahead in the game they are. Changing that number to light level just makes more sense.
One could also argue that the grimoire score is a even better number to display as it takes into consideration a lot more elements of the game and are generally awarded for taking a variety of in game actions.
Just a suggestion

That doesn't make them better players... especially if they're just following the video instructions like a robot. Zero practice, hardly any fighting, just "follow the video" True, someone with a SUPER LOW score probably hasn't played much and that probably says something about their skill in (say) a Raid or whatever. But beyond that, it's just an ePeen measurement. Light level at least gives you an idea of how effective they'll be at a raid... someone running WotM w/ 355 might be having a harder time than someone w/ 375 -- not impossibly hard but perhaps more babysitting than you feel like doing today. Either way, it's not that hard to see the values. The Roster on your fireteam tells you pretty easily -- invite and if you don't like what you see then kick (if that's your thing). If you use the website or companion app then that's just a couple clicks.
