Will Microsoft Backtrack?
Sony blatantly stated: We aren't accusing you all of piracy so used games are 100% accessible. We don't require you to be online, and our games will always work offline.
That whole section was a PR GOLDMINE for Sony. It was essentially a Microsoft bashing session and absolutely nobody was upset about it (except Microsoft probably, hahaha).
Basically, Sony came out and said all of the controversial things the Xbox One is doing are BS and the PS4 won't touch any of it.
Can Microsoft take any of it back? Will they? I am not optimistic. They have dug their own grave here. They've invested so much into this that to back out now would make them look ridiculous. It would also make them the internet's bitch as we try to get them to (*gasp*) have better customer policies in the future.
And yet... if they DID take it back, they would get a lot of smugness... but I bet that even with their outrageous price tag people would be converted back to the Xbox One. After that smugness faded, or at least was grown accustomed to, people would realize they changed their policy based on customer feedback and would probably get a lot of loyalty from people. In all honesty, I think that while they won't do it most likely... they really should for the sake of business (since that's all they care about there).
Thoughts on Microsoft's options?

I am not necessarily opposed to paying more for XB1 with the new Kinect but they need to make a case for why it's worth the extra cost. All I've seen so far is it works as a great remote control and that's not worth $100 to me. I honestly feel that the XB1 is a bit more forward thinking in where entertainment is going but if they're going to attach all this crap to make it work, it's just not worth jumping through all those hoops!

If Xbox one does not remove 24 hour DRM they can pack up and go home now.

I think that Microsoft will keep the current price of the Xbox One and re-work on all of the stuff that Sony mentioned. Sure it shows that Microsoft is weak and saying that it was the wrong thing to do, but they also love money, and they'll do whatever to get it.

I have a leaked document (basically is MS's first blueprint for what they were aiming to achieve with the X1) from 2010 that says MS were fully expecting the PS4 to retail at $399 based upon a "historical assumption". Why then they went with a $499 price tag bothers me. The hardware is weaker. The DRM has turned the Internet against them... it doesn't make sense to me.

I am not a big fan of the price for the Xbox One, but I think one thing that would defiantly win back at least a couple of Xbox fans would be if they made the Xbox One backwards compatible. Maybe then I would be more likely to pay $499.

2 отв.Here is how Microsoft could easily redeem themselves and take the console war by storm no contest. 1. Ease off on the DRM. And by that I mean get rid of it, it's a sinking ship. 2. Constant online connection/24 hour check ins need to go as well. 3. Make it so kinect 2.0 is not required to use the console. 4. Announce another package of the console that does not include the Kinect and drop the price 100 dollars. This puts them in direct competition with ps4 and solves the kinect rage. They should also have their kinect bundle but that should stay at the 499 price point. I personally think they would blow ps4 out of the water if they did this.

I don't know, they have already been backsliding. Notice they brought us check ins just so they could say it isn't "always on". They've been "clarifying" their stance on used games since the term "fee" got thrown around. Obviously they are concerned about gamers' opinion of the xbox. After tonight, they have to know they are losing the propaganda war very, very badly. I think they will continue to "clarify" their stances on DRM and used games.

If Microsoft wants to stand a chance against Sony, they have to. Sony basically forced MS to get rid of their terrible policies.

I expect Microsoft to reverse their policies regarding used games and always-online DRM. HOWEVER The only way for them to win back their fanbase is by doing the above, then reinstating a price lower than the PS4 (which won't happen).

6 отв.Microsoft made their decision with Windows 8 and what they were doing there. It became abundantly clear to me then. They are trying to stop piracy in every aspect they can. It's admirable. But by trying to target a few, they are affecting the masses. Blizzard didn't learn from that mistake, and everyone jumped ship as soon as that happened. Microsoft buried themselves in the past week. I'm going to change over my pre-orders tomorrow. Time to abandon ship. I'm done.

Doubt it. It seems to me M$ is banking on the idea of next-gen being pure online. Not to mention publishers and developers will probably side with M$ behind closed doors. They can say what they want for PR, but used game sales hurt them. The fact that their games cannot be sold used on Xbox One (without collecting a percentage of the sale) means they will make more money.

I wonder if their DRM policy was what they used as a bargaining chip to get exclusive games. If they have those policies written into their contracts with publishers, it will be difficult to backtrack.

I sure hope Microsoft changes their policies. That'll prove they truly listen to customer feedback.

You can bet on it. They're basically forced to, no other option. They have to to save their system. They'll half-ass it, of course. But they'll do it.

Microsoft is pretty much stuck on their current course. They may change their stance later on in the One's life, but I'm not holding my breath.

I think Sony and Microsoft have set themselves up and laid out their paths, and made that clear to everyone. Either side may alter their direction by a few degrees, but it's too far to start going somewhere else. They've simply settled into their niches

Probably not, but hopefully. I would rather they take the Bioware approach and try and please their fans rather than their pocketbooks.
