He never smiles, he is quick to talk about the dream of the City, and he has never shied from hard decisions. His life bends under the double weight of honor and duty, each act of service more exhausting, each victory more costly. He continues anyway. He has never had time for anything softer than iron.
He fought in the Battle of Twilight Gap, and was one of the two protégés of Lord Saladin, and he remains close to Saladin still. Now he's the Vanguard Commander, a role which answers directly to the Speaker, as acts as the middleman for the other Vanguard and Factions. He is the Titan Mentor, and guides you on your path to perfecting the arts of the Ward of Dawn and Fist of Havoc.
Thanks to our Guardian's intervening he also now controls a legion of Titans wielding fists of fire.
He sits as the head of the Consensus, leading the other two Vanguard mentors and Tower recognized Factions in the meetings concerning the Tower and City. It is possible there are others within the Consensus but are currently unknown. When the Faction Concordat became too dangerous to allow in the Tower he made the call to remove them, the New Monarchy enforced that ruling, allowing the Future War Cult into the Tower in place of Concordat.
The New Monarchy wishes to overthrow the City Consensus and place one person of impeccable character in its void. They offered this role to him, but he turned them down and continued being simply the Vanguard Commander.
This is the legend of a Titan, this is the legend of Commander a Zavala

He's also a ruthless mother-blam!-er. "Forget what they say about the enemy of my enemy. If something stands between you and [your objective], put them down." There are a handful of other quotes that show he has so sympathy for the enemy. None.
