Now, I have noticed something direly wrong with the mindset people hold towards multiplayer.
Too often I hear, "KDR doesn't mean shit!"
"I'm not a no-life, I don't care about a high KDR."
Blah blah blah..
Now I understand not everyone has put the time in to pull off positive KDRs every game, or consistently put up good numbers on the scoreboard.
But it is the pure neglect for the founding principle that Team Deathmatch (encompasses almost all destiny PvP game types) was built on that bothers me.
Nobody seems to give two shits about maintaining a positive KDR, but does no one realize that by giving yourself a negative KDR, you have directly fed the other team more points than you contributed to your own team???
KDR is the ONLY thing that matters in a Team Deathmatch gametype. Game types like "control" simply add a side objective, but KDR remains the primary goal.
so I ask, why do you not care about KDR? Do you just not care about winning or at least giving your team a chance to win?
Did you just simply not realize that KDR actually DOES matter?
Again, I'm not trying to correct anyone, I'm just curious as to why it seems that the general Destiny population doesn't understand such a concept.
Here's a picture, posted by "CrazyT101" of a game won with ZERO control captures, highlighting the importance of KDR. While not everything, it does hold significant weight in determining a match winner.
How about a picture?
EDIT: It's not about how high the KDR is, but about consistently maintaining a positive KDR for your team, as long as the Kill-Death spread is positive you have HELPED your team, rather than HINDERED.
EDIT2: a lot of people have brought to my attention the necessity of team assists and certain tactics that still contribute positively to the "team effort." While important, IMO these additions still do not change the core concept of control (TDM.)
LASTEDIT: thank you all for the feedback! Seems there's a variety of viewpoints on this matter from "KDR still don't mean shit" to "I just play the game for fun."
I'm a pretty competitive guy and I forgot not everyone shares the same feeling. It may just be a videogame, but a game, nonetheless. And I like to win games!
THANKS GUARDIANS!
(Additional) FINAL EDIT: I really appreciate all of the thought out replies guys. Opens my eyes to a much wider world of Destiny than before. GOOD LUCK to all guardians in the crucible and hopefully this thread will help some players. Maybe?
Either way, cheers!
**A Note For Bungie**
-I know it's probably been said many times by now, but this thread strongly suggests people desire more of a reward from the crucible. Even something as simple as a more heavily influenced RNG roll for every 1000 points you've nabbed for your team. Just a thought.

Having a positive KD is important in most FPS games you need it to win. Tbf in destiny as long as you're holding more control points you can win with a negative KD but that's besides the point. I'm happy with my marginally above 1KD, because I can go to 5000/6000 points in a game with a 1 or higher KD and know that I've contributed a lot to the victory.
-
2 RepliesKd doesn't mean shit as long as your helping your team get kills idk why people care about their kd. Its not like you get rewarded better often times people that finish on top don't get shit
-
3 RepliesOf course overall k/d matters. If you have less than 1 then it means you died more than you killed across all games therefore you are shite. If you have a negative k/d but still think you are marvellous you need to step back and check your ego. It has nothing to do with camping either. If people think they are that good then they shouldnt need to camp to get positive k/ds. I only have 1.26 across nearly 6000 kills so im no pro but ive killed nearly 1200 more than died and im happy with that.
-
My k/d in destiny is bleh My k/d in bf4 is solid My k/d in cod don't play it My thoughts on k/d if I made positive power to me if I don't oh well
-
Also pvp is broken I noticed a guy 12 games in a row do his best and the -blam!- that got 0kills an 18 deaths got a thunderlord
-
I play the regular pvp with a titain or hunter just for the grimmore points nothing more unless I wanna break down a bad juju other than that I dont care about winning K/D is trash any way if K/D in pvp mattersthen K/D in pve should matter as well. Now come Iron bannd that might offer a way to lv32 or some decent weapons then and only then will I play to win I will summon member of MSK to play with and let death follow where we control ^_^
-
12 RepliesK/D only matters in either TDM or FFA or anything else like those 2. It doesnt mean sh*t in objective matches.
-
I think it varies from game mode to game mode although in Destiny everything is somewhat kill based. I myself end up with games where I have a negative KDR, but had more kills / points then my team. I contributed a lot, but also died a lot. As long as you win, who cares? Lol.
-
KDR matters, not because of the number, but because it means you are killing other people more than they are killing you. No one wants to have more deaths than kills because that's what makes the game fun.
-
For those of you that want to win and do well, that's perfectly fine. I understand competitiveness and the fact that you want to be the best. Many of us don't care about that in a video game though. We play to have fun and everyone has fun differently. For instance, I don't enjoy crucible, mostly because I'm terrible and don't feel like spending time trying to get better at it. I'm forced to go in once in a while for bounties and such, and I hurt my team because I'm there. As soon as I finish the needed bounty I bail and leave you alone though. Many others only play for rewards, which in this game are completely random so it matters not if you win or even have a kill. In other words, the only way you're going to get into matches with people that care about kdr, is playing with a regular clan group.
-
K/d is important but only in relation to other states like wins. If you have a 5 k/d and 10% win then you are a camper. Who has no effect on the overall game. Lose all game and kill 5 and die once.
-
3 RepliesKDR in Control is nothing without playing the objective. How often do you see threads in here of people going "I just went 30,000 to 0 in Control but still lost!"? Often, because the objective is more important than an individual's KDR.
-
The only reason k/d matters is to feed an ego , and as a very competitive player it is important to ME to have a positive K/D
-
When Bungie gives me a reason to try for a positive K/D ratio, I'll try harder. Until then, it is all up to the RNG for my rewards
-
For those of you who don't care about winning/KD/helping your team; I hope i never play with you in crucible. For those of you who like to have a good time, enjoy winning, and doing well yourself... well... i like you guys. I'm not saying you have to go balls to the wall every second of every game... but god there's never an excuse to go negative 10+ in a game if you were there the whole time.

Control is also a team death match gametype,

I HATE CRUCIBLE. I can't stand the fact that a 10 has the same kill power as a 30. That is why I have played Iron Banner and found it enjoyable at times. I have tried so much to have a positive KDR. It just isn't happening. I have only had a positive number twice. Both in Iron Banner. KDR for me overall is not a possibility. The last time I checked I had 300 kills and almost 2000 deaths. With all that said, when I do play, I contribute as much as I can possibly. If that can't be accepted and taken as a positive, so be it.
-
I've got 21.0 and 20.0 kd before, its not that difficult, my usual standard kd is a 2
-
2 RepliesI got a kd of 7.5 the other day... It didn't matter
-
you may consider to edit and add "PvP" in your title. either way I don't give a rats ass what your trying to convey
-
Ehh there are game types where it's a lot less important. For example I only play clash, because I'm not great, my KD ranges from .5-2, but averages around .85, yet im almost always in the top three for points on my team, and my teams win a good amount of the time. Another example would be a game type like salvage. Obviously KD means everything in clash or rumble because that's the only way to earn points and there isn't a modifier to give you more points per kill. But KD isn't representative of everything, certainly not a direct representation of skill. Like i always have double digit kills (not that I'm good, because I'm not) and my low KD, but then let's say there's a guy who averages 4 kills and a KD of 2.0. Seen this happen multiple times in a game. Who contributed more to the win? Me obviously, even though some would say the 2.0 played better. So KD can matter greatly but it doesn't always.

11 RepliesEdited by samwenchester: 12/28/2014 3:56:55 PMSorry but if say I get a negative kd in a match but everytime I died I hit 3 on the posing team before they were killed we get 3 times more points than they did by killing me. Assist is what helps decide a match in team death match. 3 of us can run a 3.0 kd but the other three get no assist but run a 1.0 we still lose because the other team averaged a 1.5 but had hella assists. My 3.0 means nothing when for every one 150 point kill I get the other team get 250 300 per kill with assists. Just saying. Kd is only half the win ratio in team deathmatch. There are many teams like mine who run a 1.5 and lower across the board in clash with the other team running 2 or better and we still win by a couple g because our assists are double or better than theres. It's team deathmatch for a reason. Plus most of the peopl you see have an average of 3.0 or better are people staying out of the actual fight sniping getting 5 or 6 kills and no deaths which brings ther kd average up quick. That's why people say kd doesn't matter to know someone's skill level.

Edited by RebornV3: 12/28/2014 3:52:02 PMThis isn't your normal multiplayer shooter game sadly K/D does not matter in Destiny. Its all about the loot drops and it seems you only get loot if your in 3-6th place no point in even trying to do good in the game. When you have the highest K/D and lots of flag caps and then the guy in last place that was AFK most the game with a 0.1 K/D will get 2 legendaries, Vex Mythocast and 3 strange coins you just stop trying or quit crucible you put the team on your back and get nothing only the bad kids get rewarded in Destiny.
-
I will agree with you on the point of just trying to keep your k/d at or above 1.0. Don't really care for high k/d because I'm not going to go around trying to maintain it.
-
1 ReplyI just play for fun, like I do in all games. My K/D on nearly every shooter is usually around 1.00 - 1.15 so it's nothing special, but I wouldn't say I'm a bad player either. K/D obviously does matter in PVP, but not to the stage where people camp in corners or whatever to get cheap kills just to raise their K/D. Stuff like that doesn't make a player good or better than anyone else my opinion. Just a bit of a stat-whore. I'd rather have someone charging in, blasting a dude, capping an objective then getting annihilated than a guy who sits back all game so he has a pretty K/D at the end. This is how I usually play. Sometimes I'll take out a few guys, sometimes only the one then I'll get blasted in the back. It doesn't really matter as long as you're doing something useful to the team.
