Hi, I got some questions for you folks about the story of Destiny. I recently restarted playing and I've been curious to know a lot of things that perhaps people can answer because there is a bunch of thing I do not know or understand. The same happened with Halo back in the days, after playing the campaign tons of time, I still can't explain to someone what it is all about in details hahahaha. So here comes the questions, bunch of them about the lore/story and a few about the actual gameplay. I did not finish any DLC campaign yet but I do want to get spoiler for now. I want to enjoy the game as much as I can with knowledge of the lore. Thank you for your upcoming answers, feel free not answering every questions, also feel free to answer with few words, or redirect me to a link that can answer a question if I go read said article. I know there are wiki's about the lore of Destiny but it doesn't always answer what exactly I would like to know.
Lore/Story:
1. The Traveler. What is it exactly? Why did it arrives and helped humanity? Do we know who or what is inside? Does it belong to any of the known races? Why did the Cabal destroyed part of it? (I am not even sure I remember correctly why it is broken).
2. Who is the leader of the Vex? Who created them and what is their purpose?
3. Are there other races existing in Destiny universe outside of humans, vex, cabal, hive and fallen? Any clues of something intelligent somewhere else?
4. Why did humanity never met any of those races before now? Are the Hive supposed to be the ''Darkness'' that was chasing the Traveler? If I remember correctly, there was something about darkness and every races were running away from it?
5. Are there other world / planet outside of the solar system? At the beginning of Destiny 2, are we against the entire fleet of the Cabal? or just a part of it? and their leader, was it the ultimate Cabal leader or not? I've seen a golden ship with Cabal that were not agressive towards me, what is it?
6. Is the tower the only humanity stronghold? Or are there a bunch of places on Earth with survivor and people as important as those main characters such as Zavala and Ikora?
7. What exactly destroyed humanity? Like why is everyone dead on every planet but not on Earth? How did some survived that cataclysm?
8. What are the ghost? Did they come from the Traveler?
9. Who are the nine?
-------------------------------------------------------
Gameplay:
1. From what I understand, once you collect an equipment, you are safe to destroy it and get it back whenever you want for a price? I can make space in my storage like never before?
2. When I look at the planet map, what are the grey icon showing a little buddy, like a circle with a sort of triangle/arrow pointing down under the circle? I though it was telling me a friend of mine is on this planet at the moment, but nop, none are online and there is a bunch of those icon on different planets such as Mars, Nessos and the moon.
3. Why did they remove the three factions (New Monarchy, Dead Orbit and Future War Cult)?

Hoo boy, tough one right off the bat.
We don’t know exactly, but it appears to be the physical conduit for the Light, one of the two cosmic deities in the Destiny universe.
Pre Shadowkeep the answer would have been it was running from the Darkness. The Traveler advances races rapidly in order to attempt to defeat the Darkness. With Shadowkeep and a few pages of a particular lore book, it seems the Darkness and the Traveler are playing a cosmic game. The Traveler seeds and guides life, the Darkness eliminates it.
We don’t know.
Nope, it’s a big ball of mystery. Whether the Traveler was manifested by the Light or built for it by another race is unknown.
The Cabal didn’t destroy part of it. If you’re talking about the Shard, that was left by the Traveler purposefully during the Collapse in order to allow us to get our Light back. The Traveler doesn’t seem time as a straight line. If you’re referring to it defeating Ghaul, that wasn’t any actual damage. The Traveler merely cracked it’s shell while bursting out of the cage.
2. Who is the leader of the Vex? Who created them and what is their purpose?
We don’t know, it’s highly likely they don’t have a singular overarching mind. The Vex are divided into subtypes, each with a different purpose or method of achieving their end goal. Presumably the Vex made themselves, given that they are organic. They liquified themselves and put the liquid into the robots. Their purpose is to become eternal by becoming a fundamental law of the universe, like Gravity.
3. Are there other races existing in Destiny universe outside of humans, vex, cabal, hive and fallen? Any clues of something intelligent somewhere else?
If there are, not many. The Hive’s entire purpose is a crusade of universal genocide in the name of the Sword Logic, the Final Shape and the Deep. The Books of Sorrow detail several of these species slaughter by the Hive over billions of years. The Cabal are also not a single race, the empire is made up of several species. We also see a few more races through Calus’s Shadows.
4. Why did humanity never met any of those races before now? Are the Hive supposed to be the ''Darkness'' that was chasing the Traveler? If I remember correctly, there was something about darkness and every races were running away from it?
The Vex presence in the solar system predates humanity’s. We just had to gain the ability to get to them. They were the first race encountered before the Collapse, Clovis Bray fighting a secret war against them with the Exos.
The Hive are not the Darkness, but they are the enemy race most closely associated with it. Oryx, the former God-King of the Hive, had communed with the Darkness itself to learn the power to Take.
The Fallen are running from it as they had their own Collapse called the Whirlwind. Only problem is the Traveler didn’t save their asses, the Fallen from that time period are also almost all extinct.
The Cabal are at war with the Hive. It seems their presence in the Solar System was not to expand their Empire, but to learn what they could in order to defend it. If Oryx hadn’t shown up and decimated their forces, the Cabal would have launched a full scale invasion of the City from Phobos.
Yes.
No, that fleet was specifically the fleet belonging to the Red Legion, led by Dominus Ghaul. Even then it was not even the entire fleet, as Ghaul launched simultaneous assaults on key areas in the Solar System, most notably wiping out the Sunbreaker order of Titans completely in their conquest of Mercury.
Dominus Ghaul for all intents and purposes, was the leader of the Cabal. He did not yet have the title of Emperor, as he wanted to claim the Traveler first. Calus, the guy in the golden ship, was the previous Emperor, overthrown by Ghaul. He may very well have his old position back, or he might no longer care for his broader empire. Calus met the Darkness during his exile after Ghaul’s betrayal, it’s turned him into the most cheerfully nonchalant pessimist ever.
Calus has a keen interest in us Guardians. Calus’s end goal is to be the last living thing in existence before the Darkness finally kills him, we’ve impressed him to the point where he has become obsessed with our Guardian becoming the Queen on his chessboard, his right hand, his Shadow of Shadows.
6. Is the tower the only humanity stronghold? Or are there a bunch of places on Earth with survivor and people as important as those main characters such as Zavala and Ikora?
No.
On Earth, maybe.
The main place you need to remember is the Reef. They’re central to the universe and the war that’s coming.
What exactly destroyed humanity? Like why is everyone dead on every planet but not on Earth? How did some survived that cataclysm?
The Darkness. The big fleet of Pyramid ships.
Simple. Not all of humanity was destroyed, any that survived would undoubtedly attempt to rally together, Earth was where the Traveler was and therefore the last place the Darkness got to.
The Traveler crippled itself and out itself into a coma to repel the Darkness and leave us with Ghosts.
What are the ghost? Did they come from the Traveler?
The Ghosts came from the Traveler. They seem to be part of a new method of combating the Darkness, as before the Traveler made an exception and held its ground with us, they did not exist.
9. Who are the nine?
Complex question. To keep it short, they are dark matter entities linked to the planets in our solar system given consciousness by the life that sprung up around it.

The Darkness told us that the Darkness and the Traveler were originally the force that controlled life/death/evolution/etc. in the universe (basically God(s) with a capital G). The Darkness tells us that the Traveler has a change of heart and decided to break the system. We don’t know what this means, but most likely it was when the Traveler took physical form and began its path through the universe. We don’t know how true any of this is, because the Darkness could be lying.
This is the lore excerpt that explains it.

Here’s what we do know:
The Traveler does not belong to any race. It is literally Light inside a mechanical shell as far as we know. It traveled trough the universe fleeing from the Darkness. Basically the Traveler is life and the Darkness is death. Several times the Traveler has stopped in solar systems and helped the beings it encountered develop in science and improve their standards of living. But the Darkness always followed it. The Traveler would always flee and the Darkness killed the species the Traveler encountered. The Darkness and its servants have also destroyed many species that never encountered the Traveler.
The Traveler eventually came to us, Humanity. We entered a Golden Age full of science, discovery and innovation. Then the Darkness (a fleet of Pyramid Ships) arrived. For the first time the Traveler did not flee and struck back at the Darkness. The Traveler and Darkness are equal and opposite forces bound together, and they were both crippled by the clash, entering a slumber. Before this happened, the Darkness did its damage and destroyed Humanity, putting us into a new Dark Age. This event was called the Collapse.
This was when the Traveler was damaged. The Cabal never damaged it. Ghaul made a Cage that cut off the Traveler’s Light, making the Guardians lose their powers.
2. Who is the leader of the Vex? Who created them and what is their purpose?
We don’t know. All of that is a mystery. What we know is what the Vex are now:
They are a single mind, all connected and compartmentalized to share information. The greater Vex Minds hold more information and organize the actions of the lesser units, but no single Vex is truly the leader. The closest to a single leader was Atheon. Atheon was the pinnacle of Vex thought, one with the Vault of Glass and permanently woven into time.
The Vex have one goal (which you will learn about in the Curse of Osiris expansion):
The Convergence. Basically they want to make themselves one with all space and time and reduce all existence to patterns and code. Complete perfection and control.
3. Are there other races existing in Destiny universe outside of humans, vex, cabal, hive and fallen? Any clues of something intelligent somewhere else?
Yes. The Hive have slaughtered many species, the Cabal have also encountered many, etc.
Some species include:
The Taishibethi
The Clipse
The Ammonites
The many species of the Harmony
The Arcborn
The Qugu
4. Why did humanity never met any of those races before now? Are the Hive supposed to be the ''Darkness'' that was chasing the Traveler? If I remember correctly, there was something about darkness and every races were running away from it?
Basically they’re all dead, mostly because of the Hive (this is a huge oversimplification and some species are still alive, such as the remnants of the Clipse).
The Hive and their Worm Gods are servants of the Darkness. The Darkness itself has been shown as a single entity or the Pyramid Ships. Their goal is to kill everything, especially the Traveler.
Yes, there are many other worlds and planets. The Cabal fleet we fought was not everything. It was only the Red Legion, which is their best Legion. Their are still many fleets in the Cabal Empire. Ghaul was the ruler of Cabal, but Caiatl (Calus’ daughter) is the Cabal empress and still rules them. Now that Ghaul is dead, Caiatl is the undisputed ruler.
The Golden ship belongs to Calus. Calus used to be the Cabal Emperor, but Ghaul, Caiatl and others overthrew him. Now Calus is on his own side, collecting those he deems strong/worthy and waiting for the end of the universe. He and his Loyalists are oddly an enemy and slightly an ally at the same time, but he really isn’t a good ally. So sometimes his Cabal Loyalists try to kill us, sometimes they don’t.
6. Is the tower the only humanity stronghold? Or are there a bunch of places on Earth with survivor and people as important as those main characters such as Zavala and Ikora?
The Last City is Humanity’s only stronghold. The Tower is one of seven, and part of the Wall that protects the Last City. Guardians and some humans have outposts and settlements outside the City, but there isn’t anything like the Last City.
7. What exactly destroyed humanity? Like why is everyone dead on every planet but not on Earth? How did some survived that cataclysm?
As I explained earlier, the Darkness (a fleet of Pyramid Ships) attacked Humanity, destroying our civilization. The Traveler clashed with the Darkness and they canceled each other out. The Darkness was repelled. This event was called the Collapse.
8. What are the ghost? Did they come from the Traveler?
When the Traveler repelled the Darkness and the Collapse ended, the Traveler fell into a slumber. Just before the Traveler slept, it split away parts of itself. These parts were sparks of Light, each one with its own consciousness that used to be a part of the Traveler’s consciousness. The sparks created shells out of the wreckage of the Collapse (using scraps from destroyed human tech and stuff). They are the Ghosts.
9. Who are the nine?
The Nine are Dark Matter. To explain it simply, think of them as dust in space being pulled around by gravity and being pulled into loops around planets/stars/galaxies/etc.
Gravity and matter create ripples that ripple through the loops of dark matter. The Nine are the loops of Dark Matter around the planets of our solar system, and supposedly the effects of the Light are the reason why they became conscious. But because they are Dark Matter, their very existence as loops of consciousness is bound by the gravity of our solar system. If our solar system dies, they die. They want the Light because they could use it to overcome their reliance on matter.

Gameplay:
1. From what I understand, once you collect an equipment, you are safe to destroy it and get it back whenever you want for a price? I can make space in my storage like never before?
Only some items. Look in Collections and you’ll see what you can remake. If you go to the Tower or the Farm, there is a thing called the Vault where you can store up to 500 items.
I believe that means one of the NPC’s there wants to speak to you, for items/quests/missions/etc.
3. Why did they remove the three factions (New Monarchy, Dead Orbit and Future War Cult)?
They still exist in lore. Destiny 2 had limited time Faction Rallies that happened every few weeks, but they stopped that. Just part of how they wanted the game to be.
Well the gameplay ones are
1. There is a collections but since weapons and armor are random rolled, you cant pull them out which sucks.
2. The gray people icons are the vendors wanting to speak with you because of quests or what not.
3. Faction rally's didnt go well. So until bungie brings them back, they dont do anything
