This is part of my Vex series that I am posting today in celebration of my b-day (Dec 27). I will link this with the other post in the series, so please read both and see what I hav to say. Enjoy
Note that the Vex are NOT built primarily for combat, fighting was just a necessary improvement
Units:
Goblins: they are the base unit of the Vex and serve as light infantry units, attacking in large numbers. A Goblin alone has the power to simulate an entire world (or probably even a universe or more than that) down to the actions of every last organism present. They typically use Slap Rifles, which are used like guns but actually serve for several utility/construction purposes by receiving energy from an unknown place/time and simply discharging it.
Hobgoblins: having optical sensors superior to that of other Vex along with acute sensors in their horns, Hobgoblins are utilized as snipers on the battlefield, but I believe these Vex are meant to work on more meticulous and precise projects in Vex construction. Thanks to Oryx, we do know that their primary purpose is to provide and transfer energy where it is needed in the Vex network. Their chassises are always equipped with Line Rifles, which receive energy from a more spontaneous source than Slap Rifles, and can be used as sniping weapons. Hobgoblins have a defensive mechanism where they temporarily put themselves in stasis to prevent damage and give other Vex time to come in to support it. Hobgoblins can also launch Slap Grenades, which channel a pulse of Void energy into a specific location like a miniature gate.
Minotaurs: built with heavy armor, large size, and brutal strength, these Vex units are used to do the heavy lifting in Vex construction. They use their teleporting ability far more aggressively than the other Vex. Minotaurs actually hold more Mind Fluid than Goblins, Hobgoblins, and Harpies, but use their computational power for algorithms on physics and building rather than simulating like other Vex. Minotaurs wield Torch Hammers, a weapon that fires a burst of damaging radiation.
Harpies: these Vex move quickly, flying through the air in groups. They must become stationary to fire upon enemies, but fire a rapid barrage that quickly shreds through enemies. I do not know of any construction purposes of the Harpies, so theorize they must be used as quick-response teams to threats or matters of importance.
Hydra: the Hydra may be slow, but inside it contains a large amount of Mind Fluid, protected by thick armor, heavy cannons, and a translucent rotating shield. Hydras process all information sent to them from the Vex around them with amazing speed and determine what action must be taken to continue whatever task they are set on.
Cyclops: this stationary platform contains a large amount of Mind Fluid inside its thick armor, and works far better as a transmitter and beacon than a turret. This unit is probably used to help coordinate Vex construction and send signals more quickly than Vex could without it. Though the Cyclops packs a powerful punch with each shot, damaging it can cause its processors to overload and it will begin firing randomly and spastically in a confused frenzy.
Vex Axis Minds: these Vex are built larger than other models so that they contain more computational ability than other Vex to oversee the progress of those Vex in the subtype they tend to. They only come in the forms of massive Hydras and Minotaurs for the purpose of containing more Mind Fluid as well as more offensive/defensive capabilities.
Subtypes:
Hezen Corrective: this Vex subtype makes up the majority of the Vex on Venus and aggressively attacks House Winter and other enemies that move across Venus. Marked by bronze coloration.
Hezen Protective: this subtype is another major Vex branch that is found on Venus, and protects structures like the Vault of Glass and Citadel as well as major parts of their gate systems, and is the group that works on projects involving these locations. Marked by harvest gold coloration with white stripes.
Virgo Prohibition: this subtype holds control over many areas of Mars and constantly battles the Cabal, testing the boundaries of the Exclusion Zone in an attrition war. The Cabal continuously win and expand their territory to claim control of Vex constructs; this subtype is the wrong algorithm to face the Cabal on Mars. Marked by silvery grey coloration.
Sol Divisive: this subtype resides in and protects the Black Garden and its Heart. They are the group who are most dedicated to the adaptive measure of worshiping the Darkness/Heart in an attempt to gain more power. Marked by Grey-green coloration and a coating of moss and plants from years of remaining motionless.
Precursors: also known as the Sol Primeval, these Vex move in bodies built ages ago and are encountered in the Vault of Glass, where time runs together. Marked by white chassis with gold decal and blue lights rather than red.
Descendants: also known as the Sol Imminent, these Vex have bodies that have endured wear and the elements for eons, but all evidence suggests that they were built in the distant future. These Vex are encountered in the Vault of Glass, where time runs together. Kind of a dusty brown coloration with yellow lights rather than red.
Aphix Invasive: this subtype is marked by aggressive behavior along with red coloration and spike attachments on their exteriors. They are mostly found in the Prison of Elders and Vault of Glass, but have also appeared in small numbers throughout our solar system. The only apparent purpose of this subtype is to confront and kill Guardians, and is demonstrated by the way they entered the Prison without being captured by the Awoken. The Awoken cannot get them to leave, and the Mind that controls them, Qodron, seeks only to lure in and kill Guardians in the Prison.
The Vex divide into subtypes to accomplish goals efficiently by assigning certain groups to certain tasks, thus eliminating the confusion of random assignment to tasks. In this way, different Vex Minds oversee different groups of Vex and share what progress they've made with the Collective Mind. By dividing their numbers in this way, the Vex are able to ensure that if one group is defeated the rest will not be effected greatly and they are able to execute many different plans for conquering the universe at once. The Vex we have faced in our system is a pathetic fraction of the Vex’s true power focused solely on how to overcome the events in our system, so imagine how much more trouble we would be in if the entirety of the Vex worked together in a single algorithm against humanity
