If allowing players to change character Race was so easy they almost certainly would have enabled it. I should think there’s a strong likelihood that when they initially tested out character recustomization they discovered that switching Races led to [b][i]very bad things[/i][/b] occurring in other parts of the game. As is evident from watching videos explaining glitches found in various games, developers often have certain values buried within lines of code that are referred to when executing other, seemingly unrelated instructions (referencing a fixed value when they need to set an unchanging in-game behavior, referencing a small variable when they need to construct a simple if/then instruction or perhaps referencing numerous variables to simulate certain types of randomness). This is generally done as a means of reigning in overall game file size as well as reducing the number of man hours needed to code as innumerable sets of instructions can be tailored to refer back to a relatively small number of values in key lines of code. Hypothetically speaking, let’s say the devs set character Race as a value that a variety of instructions reference before execution under the assumption that said value that would remain constant after character creation. Now tack on seven years of additional lines of interconnected code some of which, again hypothetically, are built upon instructions that refer back to the Race value that previously was assumed to be a constant, and it becomes apparent how something that [i]seems[/i] like it should be relatively easy to swap out may in fact be a wooden block at the base of the precariously balanced Jenga tower that is several years worth of code that has seen numerous sizable additions and revisions since launch.
