This is the sequel to an Indonesian film called The Raid: Redemption, which was about an Indonesian SWAT team going into an apartment block, controlled by a fearless druglord. The team gets massacred within minutes and its up to the last survivors to take out the boss so that they can escape - if you've seen Dredd, you'd think they based it off The Raid. First up, this is probably the most brutal movie I've seen outside of the horror genre, and that has shocked some people. In Australia, it's rated R18+ for adults only, purely due to the violence (there isn't any sex at all in the movie). Basically, all the violence is as realistic as it gets, without making the protagonist die in the first few minutes, although he's not invincible either. The film isn't meant to be realistic, but it convinces you otherwise in some scenes, especially
Anyway, as a film, it's somewhat long, it has excellent cinematography, although it's a bit shaky in one or two scenes. The action is often, the story makes sense and although the main events in the movie can be predicted pretty early, there are several twists along the way.
I rated a 9/10.
IMDB gives it an 8.8, Metacritic gives it a 70/100 from critics, 9.6 from users, RottenTomatoes gives it a 74% critics, 94% users.
